When my tech transferred all of my safety gear from my 996tt track car to my 996 GT3 he misunderstood me and also transferred my black oem shifter box that had a B&M ss in it and put the oem black box with the stock 996 long shifter into my 996tt.
The B&M in the GT3 changed from how it felt in my tt in that it got much shorter and much more notchy than it had ever been. It was extremely hard to get into first gear and the overall feeling was not good but I lived with it for 6 mos until I finally bought the 997 GT3 box and shifter from Kevin at Ultimate.
Kevin spent one hour over the phone with me explaining that I should not expect the shifter to be as short at the 997 ss which I eventually had put into my 996tt and liked it even over what the B&M had felt. He did however say that it would be a great improvement over the oem long throw shifter that had come in my 6 GT3 in the slightly shorter throw and overall confidence inspiring clean in and out gear changes.
I picked the car up today and have not had it on the track yet but I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with the 997 GT3 shifter in my car. Kevin said it would not be as short as the 997 ss but to be honest, I think it feels as short of a throw if not a tad shorter which I was not expecting. It feels light, short and yet even crisper than the 997 ss that is in my 996tt. Not sure if this has do do with the fact that it is in a GT3 and not a TT but I am a very happy camper. So much so that I wish I had put one in my 996 tt instead of the 997 ss.
Cant wait to get it on the track now! I give it a 100% thumbs up.

Like you, I installed the 997 GT3 shifter and it was a world better than the Poop B&M.
We went down that road cause I wanted something a little stronger than the all nylon 996 GT3 part. The 997GT3 part also has a good bit of plastic in it but it is reinforced with a few steel parts that strengthen it quite a bit. All in all , a good piece for decent money.

Anyone moved from the 997GT3 shifter to the Numeric Racing?

I upgraded my 996/GT3 to the 997 GT3 shifter and cups cables (the cables make a huge difference). Car shifts like a rifle bolt.
On my 997 race car they put a B&M in. I hated it so much I chucked it and put a billet shifter from BodyMotion that is pure gold. Not cheap but worth every penny. Adjustable too.
But that B&M I absolutely hated. Too short and yet not precise.

Thanks for the recommendation Dan. We love the billet option, no plastic to wear or break, fully adjustable to suit any drivers needs and on top of all that it's sexy! ;-)
If anyone needs one email me Geoff@bodymotion.com or call 732-493-2700
Thanks,

GT3s feature a specific short lever ratio on the transmission input lever.(on the gearbox side) and that makes any shifter feel shorter in the GT3.
That's why short shifters should be avoided on GT3s at all cost. The std Boxster shifter on the 996gt3 from the factory is 1000 times better.
Now, apart from the proven 996 cup shifter that ISN'T shorter,
the 997 shifter (btw the 997.1 GT3 used the same shifter as the 997 Carrera cars.. ) is as short as you'd want to go. The 997.2 Gt3 shifter is about the same in throws but with more metal inside and thus more robust.

Would you recommend the 996 cup shifter John?
I've got cup cables but haven't tried them yet and I want to get a new shifter but not sure whether to go for a 997.2 gt3 or 996 cup part.
Just wonder how the standard 996, 997.2 gt3 and 996 cup compared.
Hope you don't mind the slight highjack
Neil

Those Numeric shifters are adjustable, so I think you can probably adjust it to similar throw compared to the stock shifter. (And still get the full metal / bearings / etc.)

997 gt owners complain about their shifter esp 4-3-2 /2-3-2 shifts... numeric is an expensive option but those who get then are super happy.. do they cup cables make that much diff? I may want to try...

The cables make the biggest difference.
And added noise (vibration because there's no dampening in the attachement points, more if you have a LWFW installed) aside they have no negatives and should be a mandatory item on your do to list.
Neil, the shifter is more of a personal preference.
I like the 996 cup one but some prefer the shorter feeling of the 997 series shifters. For them, the 997.2 GT3 shifter is the best choice.
I had no problem enjoying the car with any of them.

First, I had a B&M in my 996 Carrera and originally the application guide was only for these type of models, i.e. not for use with Turbo and GT3 models with the higher grade Gretrag transaxles (G96/50 up). B&M used to offer a different for the cars with the higher grade Getrag transaxles that adjusted the cable end at the transaxle. The reason was the pivot change with the shifter swap out was too short with the Getrag gear boxes (35% throw reduction), so they made a different kit that reduced the throws 20% for initially the Turbos and later the GT3s. More recently they changed the application guide when they discontinued the other short throw kit.
Knowing all this, personally I would not invest in a B&M or factory SSK for a car with the high grade Getrag transaxles. The 997 GT3 shifter is actually the exact same as the regular 997 Carrera/Carrera S shifter (15% shorter than the regular 996 shifter). The latest version from the 997.2 GT3 has solid links at the bottom that take out a little of the slop, but throws are the same. Internally, the high grade Getrag transaxles are complete different from the low grade Getrag/Aisin transaxles (below G96/50). Internal rail arrangement is completely different and the high grade Getrag transmissions are already about 20% shorter shifting and far more direct than the low grade transaxles. Hence why the shifters feel so short in a stock 997 GT3. If we were talking about putting a B&M or factory SSK in a 996/997 C2/C2s, I would 100% for it; just not for these cars.
Maybe your issue, but not mine. Mine shifts beautifully from 2-3 and 3-2 once it is warmed up. I noticed with my car that it got really notchy around 10k miles and then really smoothened up around 15k miles. Sounds like you need to just get more miles on yours.
