Coolant Line Failures- NHTSA

However, we have had no fires requiring engines to be replaced.

Easy to fix. Get Sharkwerke barb kit. Drop motor/gearbox, remove rear water housing, and all parts with the pressed in barbs, heat barbs with mapp gas torch, pull barbs out with pliers and clean housing surfaces. New parts slide in. Using JB weld, reinstall all new barbs. After epoxy sets, drill and tap an M5 hole through each housing and barb for pinning. Using Dirko or Ultrablack silicone sealer on the threads, install the 7 M5 X 8mm long screws (pins). Reinstall all parts, pressure test before reinstalling motor/gearbox back in car. Piece of cake. 8 hour job. Just get it done. The NHTSA route is a waste of time.
Talking minus action equals nothing.

The above possible solution has been discussed many times.
I guess the overall concern is: if one was to actually spec order a...say GT2, one would expect better engineering than what was delivered. Its interesting that the Porsche Motorsports part is NOT glue. Cost cutting on the backs of their customers!

All true, The magnesium 2.7 case, early chain tensioners, The IMS bearing disaster and these hose barbs... There have been cases difficult for the engineers to get it all right the first time. So we deal with it, and get back as fast as we can to why we love these cars- driving them.

This may be covered in the previous 17 pages but it's worth bumping to the top. According to my support shop the 996 cup motor rebuild schedules come up before epoxy failures. During rebuilds the fittings are removed and re-epoxied. I'm assuming the 997 schedules do the the same. Is this true in both cases?

04 GT3 w/ 45k - Coolant Line Failure Incident
Hey guys,
I completed my first DE event with the Metro NY PCA at NJMP (T-Bolt) last week. My 2004 996 GT3 with about 45k experienced a coolant line failure on the cool down lap. The hose on the top of the engine right behind the alternator had come off. Thankfully I was running water wetter and did not cause any harm to myself or others on the track. I was able to have it fixed at the track with JB weld and ran on the track the next day and drove the car back home with no issues. I have not reported the event to the NHTSA yet but will do so. I want to get some input on what others have done or suggest doing when having the engine out to have the coolant hoses pinned/welded as the car is now 10+ yrs old. My mechanic suggested replacing the water pump and hoses. Is there anything else you guys would have checked out, including clutch etc.., while the motor is out for repairs.
Thanks in advance.
Update: Found a couple of threads on what to do with the engine out while getting the hoses pinned and have a good idea now. Thanks again.

Pinning the Coolant Lines on the 996 GT3
I have pinned the coolant lines and switched over from coolant to water-wetter on my 2005 GT3. If anyone is local to Central Massachusetts, I would be happy to demonstrate and assist in completing the process I followed. Hopefully we will all a little safer on the track.

Another coolant weld done, pipes were backing out @ 76K miles. Manthey replaced a few pipes 2 years ago but never welded. All done/welded now by Matt @ Fearnsport UK.

I picked up my 996 TT 6 months ago. I guess I need to start looking at this. I don't know if I should DIY this or just pay somebody to do it. Anybody in the DC Metro area have experience with this?
