Anyone own both Cayman R and 996gt3?

I'm assuming you are stating this since the CR drives itself and any Joe can get behind the wheel and go fast while the 6GT3 takes a skilled pilot to go fast. If you think you can get in a 6GT3 and go fast without the requisite skill (and respect of her) you will be on the wrong end of an armco.

I believe Cayman R has 330 HP at around 3,000 lbs. 6GT3 has 50 more HP and weight is a couple hundred more. Stock-to-stock, 6GT3 has a slight edge. But, in the hands of equally skilled drivers in both platforms, I would expect the 6GT3 to be much quicker.
Cayman R with PDK is actually a pretty sweet car. But if I had to pick 1 for me/track, it would be the 6GT3.

Should also add that the best time I've seen for a Cayman R on the 'Ring is around 8:06. 6GT3 has some sub 7:50 times. Even the .1 GT3 was under 8:00. Based on this, you're seeing something like 10-20 seconds at the ring. The .1 GT3 is around 10 seconds faster - and that was a car back in 1999.
Confirms that 6GT3 is the car for me...

I've driven a regular cayman with PDK at Infineon. It's pretty fun and more balanced and so easy to go thru t2 and t3 due the midengine balance but my 6 does well pretty everywhere else. Cayman didn't scare me at all at Infineon the 6 does- I like being scared. Different set skills to drive FLATOUT on a 6. 6 is a no brainer. Mike

How fast was that?
Any video/data?
-td [edit: reason I ask is that I was also at COTA and was just a MPH or so under 150 before turn 12. Just wondering what the Cayman was getting with less HP]

To me it really depends on what you plan on using the car for, they are very different cars IMHO. The Cayman R is a great all around car, nice to drive on the street and a decent track car for autocross and HPDE events for the average Joe to have some safe fun with. The 996 GT3 is not so nice to drive on the street, at least on pot-hole infested streets, It’s rough, noisy and for me away not a pleasant daily driver.
On the track the 996 GT3 is a great car, it requires your respect but once you get it right it’s very rewarding to drive at speed. The Cayman is not in the same league as the GT3, again IMHO. You will have to spend a ton of $$$$ to make it a decent track car, that will make it unpleasant to drive on the street. Some very skilled drivers are fast in the Cayman, but put the same drivers in a 996 GT3 and they will be even faster, it’s just a better car on the track.

I think the "drive's itself" comments don't tell the whole story. The R with PDK has a closer ratio 7 speed box, that is much easier to change gears, more often, without unsettling the car.
There are many turns that you would enter one gear higher than ideal, because the down and subsequent upshift would unsettle the car at a particular part of the track.
So, not only do you have a better chassis that is more forgiving in the Cayman, you will be in the peak powerband a larger percent of the time, even though the peak power in the GT3 is higher.
If you're a pro driver, without doubt you will be faster in the GT3. My 2 cents.

I have a Cayman R and a 997.1RS.
You can't compare 'stock' times since the Cayman R doesn't come with MPSCs. Putting MPCSs on the CR transformed the car (but you'll still need LCAs to get enough camber).
Mid-engine versus rear-engine dynamics is what you are really comparing.

I've never seen a cayman r come close to catching many of the 6-3's running at Sebring but most 6-3's are serious track cars with mods and seasoned drivers. I would guess most cayman r drivers love to drive but haven't hit the peak slippery slope. I'm guessing the drivers are a bit different int the 6-3 than in the cayman r. Both great cars.
