Would rather not buy CR then lose money in depreciation when I sell it to buy gt3. Better to just get what I'll eventually end up loving more.

Drive both. It will become very clear, very quickly, which you prefer. Intended use is everything, though there is plenty of overlap with the two.

If you have specific question on living with each/either please ask, but there is a great deal of difference (and a great deal of similarity) in the two cars.

Umm, you can't really go wrong. The cayman is so easy, but still rewarding, that it's a good choice. Only pick the gt3 if difficult and less comfortable are pluses for you. Sadly for me, those things are, someday...
My Cayman S would be really quick at TH if I could use more than 3rd and 4th. Car needs a close ratio box big time.

Last summer quite a few R's came out to the track. When the PDK was put into sport plus mode, it only went 5-6 laps before the cars had to come in due to over heating....really hot. We are mile high so the air is thinner and it was a 90 degree day but that was enough to turn me off.

That said, I instructed a guy a couple weekends at Pueblo Motorsports Park in a 2012 R and it is a very balanced car. He was able to do things that might have taken me into the dirt. This car had the 6 speed not the PDK and we saw no overheating although it was only in the 70's.

A story was published in Porsche Excellence Mag a while ago that got my attention. A gentlemen that was in his 60's or even 70's got a Cayman (I think an S) as his first Porsche. Took it to the track and got the bug, the very next year he traded it for a GT3 because he liked driving on the track so much. I got serious about my track driving back in 2004 when the 6GT3 came out. I have seen many Boxster and Cayman owners that once they get the Track Bug they either replace their mid-engine car or add a GT3 to their inventory. The main theme here is track, if you are not going to track the car then a Boxster or Cayman is a way better back road and every day sports car to have.

^ caveat. most ppl went from cay box to gt only b/c pag will not give the midship cars a good motor and trans. i thrased cayman S when they first came out. i tell you, 6gt3 at 380 hp, i just need 330 hp and i will be driving around 6gt3 no prob (equal driver of course). but since pag wont do it, i end up with a strange rear engine backwards car.
