Default 996 GT3 mkII rattling noises

Hello everybody. I'm just joining the Rennlist community and want to share some of my recent experience.
After having had several "street" Porsche ( 911 SC, Carrera 3.2, 993, 997 Carrera S), I just decided to go for a more race type version i.e a 996 GT3 of 2004.
I'm completely nut about my new car, and I'm not having any regret to have left the wonderful 997 S I had. It is just different, more rude but so much more accurate and the engine.... :-)
But, there is a but : I'm quiet worried about a kind of rattling noise that occurs mainly when decelerating or riding at low rev i.e. 2000-3000 rpm. It disappears when accelerating.
I know that jumping from a 997 to gt3, I have to accept that noise reduction is not a priority on such car, and I'm fine with it. I only want to be sure that there is nothing bad occurring.
Could it be the gearbox, the flying wheel, other ...?
The car came with a massive maintenance on the motor done by a know Porsche service center in Italy ( preparing cars for the cup races) and I have one year warranty.

Anyhow, if someone could share its experience on this, I would be very grateful.

Ciao

Any chance of some incar video so we can hear the rattle?

Could it be fitted with a light weight flywheel like the RSs although that is usually mostly noticeable at idle if I'm correct, I don't own an RS...

Welcome to Rennlist! Che bella macchina!

GT3s make a lot of noises and most of them are "normal".
Springs, LSD, LWFW, cage, plastic trims etc.

If this was coming from the LWFW (lightweight flywheel) , and assuming that your car has one from the PO, it would also make a rattling / vibrating noise when accelerating or braking. For example under load with a gear up, from 1500RPM.

Anti roll bars can rattle too. Make sure that they tight.

Best,

PS. I am going to move the thread to the 996 GT3 forum.

Congratulations. Very hard to find a white one. Is this the one from the middle east with brown leather interior ?

Thanks for all your replies. This car comes from Kuwait and had a single owner up to now. Interior is actually brown and has been handled by the Exclusiv dpt. No doubt that it has done quiet a bunch of track days, but no particular concerns about it.

Coming back to the noise, I'm not sure where it comes from, but i would say more from the right rear side. It seems to me that it's generated by a rotating piece, more than a vibration.

I don't know if a LWFW is mounted, because The car is a "confort" spec and I think the LWFW comes with the ClubSport spec.

As sugested by 991rox, I will try to record the sound next time I go out with my new toy :-)

The Mk2 GT3 (2003-2005) never came with a LWFW. Only the 996 GT3RS had it.

On the other hand, the Mk1 had one in the M003 "clubsport" version.

Great mod btw. A must have.

But many owners have done the LWFW... so that could be it.

Welcome.

Thanks. Any possibility to check if it is a LWFW (whitout opening the motor) ?

At idle in neutral, does the chatter stop when you depress the clutch pedal? If it does, odds are you have the LWF. It's just hard to tell without hearing it, but kind of obvious when in the car.

Lwf chatters more then rattling. Did they rebuild your LSD with better internals- now that rattles. Mike

Hey JGT3 - welcome and belisima 3! Pics are required though

I also made the leap from awesome 997S to incredible 996-3 and you'll stay as happy as you are now ... If not more so! I also found it a bit creaky/noisy but once I worked out what it all was, it stopped bugging me and many of them turned out to be specific to certain situations or went away - seats and roll bars can creak, the cd storage and console too - solve w fabric tape. I hope it is a LWFW though! Big win.

Enjoy and welcome to the 6GT3 board!

Ps - John, what's that green readout? Tire pressure monitors?
