Default 996 GT3 Refurb: What needs to be done.

Having tracked my 993turbo for a few years, I'm now thinking of a new project: buying a high mileage 996 GT3 and rebuilding it for 90% track/targa work. Not being particularly familiar with the model, I thought I'd ask the experienced and expert on this forum for their input. So thanks in advance.

Cars here are about twice the price as in the US due to a targeted tax on expensive cars. So a 2000-01 GT3 with say 50K miles could be bought for about $85K. I thought I'd pull out the engine go for a 3.9L rebuild (Sharkwerks maybe) although 4.0 parts must be near to hand. Any experience here??

What is the list of:
a) common issues with these cars that needs to be addressed, and
b) recommendations/wish list items bearing in mind the application e.g. LSD, transmission wear issues/upgrade/linkages, brakes/upgrades, suspension optimization, cooling issues, tranny and engine mounts, steering rack.
c) Wheel/tyre: what is the max tyre size that fits std fenders ?305/30/18, ?315/30/18

Sorry for my ignorance, but I need to start somewhere...
Thanks.

Great idea.
Not so great having to do this project, in a hi taxation environment. I know exactly how it feels.

Anyway, for what you have in mind, you better start with a mk2 996 GT3.
The motor and gearbox offer a more solid starting point.

Aaahhh. Let's say fast enough to frighten the 7.2GT3RS guys. (and make a few of the slower Cup drivers feel insecure)

i know your tongue will have been firmly in your cheek when you posted the above but you might be better just buying a Cup.
joking aside, by the time you get close to what you want you will have spent much more than if you had just bought a cup to begin with and you wont have a car anywhere near as good or fast.

also if its going to spend its life on the track, a cup is much much safer and keeps better residuals over a stripped out and thrashed street car.

neilwight is right. if you use it for track only, get a cup. i have a faux cup from 996gt3, let's just say it cost more than any 996gt3 cup on the mkt today. and my donor was pretty cheap. 45k or so

u dont need the big engine to scare the 997gt3's. you just need to lose wt.

tires: 255/35/18 and 315/30/18 or 260/645 and 305/645 slicks. you need 9.5" front wheels and 12" rear.

only issue is the coolant fittings falls off, dump coolant and you spin.many ways to fix it, do a search.

all GT3 have open LSD by day two. you need a cup car lsd or paul gard lsd. just do it. otherwise, you have a POS car.

linkages: if your donor is old, you can change upper control arms (dog bones), split lower control arm with monoball thrust arm bushing. bump adj toe links. monoball thrust arms. semi solid engine mount. monoball rear upper shock mounts. basically monoball the hell out of the car (not sure where you are, but the enlish refer to monoball as rose joints.)

no cooling issue.

suspension, moton, jrz, ohlin, etc. sky is the limit

str rack is pefect.

anything else u want to know?

I'd go with a Cup Car. I have restored a Mk1 GT3 and the costs are horrendous. I wouldn't do it again.

I appreciate all your input guys.
Hhmmm. Had looked at the Cups on www.my105.com earlier today....
Good to have frank and honest opinions from informed people.
I'll look more at the Cups. One disadvantage is trailering the car to the track. I have a trailer nevertheless as the turbo has been running semislicks.
One or two of my friends running Cups have had unexpected and expensive transmission issues, but I guess that's racing!

Cheers.
