Just thought I would chime in.... Mr. Michael's spec Miata is really quite well sorted, and certainly one of the nicest spec Miatas out there.
I know this because I have co-driven this car with him at Road America. In fact I have driven with him for just short of 20 years.
When he does speak, he speaks from experience, and that level of experience is extensive. He won't tell you that, but I will.
I am also quite certain that there are very few people on Rennlist with an equivalent combination of driving skill and technical expertise!
In other words....pay attention here...There are plenty of people who are more than willing to offer advise and opinions on the list, but few who have actually walked the walk! That's all!

As a total newbie, what would be a realistic budget to plan for running six or so DE's per year with a M3 or Miata?

now b/n SM and E36, i would get SM for sure.
bn SM and E36M3 is tough call. one is cheaper and fun. the other is faster and fun but also more $$$
u know, knowing your NO MOD record, i think you should get SM. there are rules, so you can't mod beyond certain point.
E36M3 have many classes. whne you hit MOD class, your GT3 or even cup cars will seem cheap. i know of one in CAL over $150k into it. so keep that in mind, seriously. if you can't stop modding, SM is it. for example, SM only has one suspension choice, with bmw..... drive a E36M3 with a set of moton on it.... you may not return to porsches!
HOWEVER, "Remember, I have no stated I am going racing. Just want a good dedicated track car (i.e., race car not street car) that I can run at the limit, have fun, and feel safe at the same time."
if you want a DE car, not racing.... SM has more deficit than E36m3.
talk to mike b and seth. one will sell you SM the other BMW.....
