Default question for the track guys

lost my Porsche Bud to a Mustang a month ago, and have a question for the track guys. how will the Mustang 500KR vs a 6-3 fair with compatible drivers, being the KR is up 160hp, but weighed down by 880 lbs which is a TON !! and i'm sure it has inferior brakes to boot. will he fair any better against a 6-turbo. i hate to rub in he went backwards.

I personally don't think he would stand a chance. That car is a monster on the straight, but you're trying to stop 3700 pounds, plus I think they run 275 tire, which is simply not enough for something that big and heavy. Now, if he put some 315 stickies on and dropped a little weight it should be a bit better.

I am by no means fast for my run group, nor am I an authority, BUT, last year out at the Glen for a NASA DE a gentleman from Western NY had a Mustang and he was very, very accomplished. He had done some suspension mods and runs sticky tires and a few other goodies...all I can say is he was certainly able to keep up with the faster cars, had to tip my hat to him, even if I am not a huge fan of American iron certainly depends on the driver's skill level. Also, if you watch Conti Sports Car Challenge, the Mustangs do very well vs. the Camaros and P-cars.

Nope. The 6Turbo is no slouch. Stock with Nittos I am turning the same times at VIR as my 6GT3 stock with Nittos.

I don't think the Mustang has the suspension to handle the track the way a Porsche does.

Totally different. There are rules written that favor a specific car(s) in the series. The poor Carrera didn't have a chance from the get go.

I drive a lot of "hotter" Mustangs with friends. They ALL are like steering a rhinoceros. Even the "special" ones like this Cobra R that I shepherded around:

I don't know why, but I've always loved Cobra R. It may not be the fastest thing out there, but it just looks fun.

I've driven my friend's earlier Cobra set up for road racing - it's fast but very tough to drive.

I can drive my 6Turbo around the track faster than I could drive my GT500 around the track. The latter was a lot to handle - too big - too heavy - too soft (stock suspension). The brakes were decent though, but again, they have to handle a lot of weight. It was "loads" of fun though.

(On a street or highway, it would be a close race - and I might even give the edge to the 'Stang against a 6-3).

gt500 kr still will need plenty of work to get it to competitive level but if you invest into it some comparable amount of money as people dump into track p-cars when they put on 3 way motons/JRZ/Ohlins, full aerokit, drop more weight - why not. any platform can be improved to the level where it becomes pretty competitive, gt500 has plenty of power, same way as Z06, Z01 cars.

'track' versions of stock mustangs got much better suspension these days but it is still not nearly close to what porsche offers in its current stock SPASM and overall feel of that car is not same as gt500. capabale driver can probably get more out of it, average driver most likely will be faster in a p-car.

On the street, the KR is a beast. Mod that thing a little bit and it's even more 'street' deadly.
On the track, there would need to be a great deal of modding of suspension/brakes/tires for the KR to be able to dance with a 6GT3.

There's a few vids of a Steeda mustang running against a GTR in California and it is no joke. Big power, big tires, and a full suspension re-do.

It's something different...

Be good,
TomK

There are a lot of variables. If the same driver, it depends on the track and length of the race or track session. The longer the straights, obviously the better for the Mustang. The longer the race, the better for the GT3. With the weight penalty, the Stang would cook the brakes and tires very quickly.

Nothing to add but would be interested to see a post-mortem.

Doesn't that Mustang run like 2-piston front and 1-piston rear brakes? I don't know... I would think it would be hard to keep that car underneath you whithout some serious upgrades.
