Who's got 'em and how much street driving do you do? Do you ever get used to it in the street setting?

Background: I went and looked at a car this weekend I've been chasing for about a year. I'm in love with the car (even though it's not my color of choice) but my biggest lingering concern after a couple days of thinking about it is the flywheel / clutch combo.

I"m not sure which units are in the car, and I"ve driven several cars in the past (non-GT3's) with light flywheel setup's but this car has the most abrupt on/off engagement of anything I've ever driven.

The noise doesn't bother me one bit, it's streetability that's my main concern because my wife loves driving all of our cars and I worry it makes this one completely useless on the street for her.

Thoughts?

Me, installed by previous owner. Its the only way I've ever known in a GT3. The engagement point, at least to me, is narrow, but streetability is not an issue.

What clutch are you running? I seem to hear the same opinions in older threads I'm reading about LWFW's as well that it doesn't much effect driveabilty.

I think this car in question has cup clutch and pressure plate as well. Maybe it's the combination of all of the 3 that makes it soo difficult to master?

Did I mention it was a dream to drive once I got rolling though?

I bet! IDK; I don't have the records in front of me, but I would assume it is the RS flywheel kit with the stock GT3 clutch? Maybe Sloth will chime in with the info before I can get you an answer tonight.

I've had my 6-GT3 since new in 2004 and the LWFW since 2007 (40K total miles, 10K of which on LWFW). I've done several track days but most of that is street miles. I'd say it is 100% good with no down side. Gear noise is a tiny bit louder, but then the car isn't a Rolls and the noise is all good. I have a GT3 RS LWFW kit (car is a 2002 996TT X50) from Suncoast:
http://suncoastporsche.com/Order-Por...-Sarasota.aspx
with a clutchmasters stage 3 kevlar clutch:

I'm used to it, lots of "clutch chatter" at idle, streetability not a concern. You do need a "light" foot, almost everyone else that drives it stalls it from 1st. My wife hates driving it.

Whether cup flywheel or rs flywheel I never had a problem
of stalling car. If u say abrupt like an off/on switch the clutch disc could be the 6 puck variety. Those puck type ain't that streetable. U cannot ease the clutch in -u just go. If u ease clutch in like a regular clutch disc- a nasty wap wap noise followed by a stall. Mike

Ha...that's basically the experience.

I'm not certain the owner knows exactly what clutch is in the car...and I'm not really sure that Copans would know either since it's been a few years since he did the tranny / LSD work but maybe I'll give him a call today.

Andy is buying a GT3! must be the perfect car after all his search !

I hope everything goes well and you get to enjoy it : )

flywheel has little to do with on/off feeling the cup I have now on feels same like the RS one I had before.
both were happy to rev fast : )
Clutch type and pressure plate used affect feeling. But no worries even if it has the wildest clucth of all with half inch of biting point, just rev it more and enjoy. In one week of driving you and wife will have master it : )

So assuming it's a cup clutch and flywheel (I remember specifically ita got a cup pulley on it too) could I put an RS clutch in it with the same flywheel or are they not compatible?

No street issues here but I don't drive it much. A little extra noise but I kind of like to "hear" the car working. I like that my brakes squeak too.

U can use a stock clutch disc with the rs/cup fw. U can also order a more aggressive material disc(non puck type). I ordered mine from trg. There's beefier pressure plates too but if it is the puck type on car of interest more then likely pressure plate is the beefier one. Beefier pressure plate like 3.8 rsr one it's slightly heavier clutch pedal. Mike

Folks I have the "full" GT3RS kit for $1,975.00

It is the very same kit that we use with the higher output GT2's and turbo's..

I recommend using the stronger pressure plate vs the standard NA RS pressure plate.
