Need help on a tire question *updated*
Updated at post #51 fyi
I need to make a wheel decision asap my RL friends. I have searched but want to get todays opinion on a specific question.
How many days do you get out of 245f/315r rear Hoosiers? If the stuff I read is any indication guys are throwing the $1250 set of Hoo Hoos away after 4 days. I find this very hard to believe.
I currently run MPSC and am getting 15 days which is approximately 60 heat cycles out of them. There is no doubt I am running them as long as anyone but that is what I do right now.
If you are the kind of guy who runs them a few sessions and the second you detect a reduction in grip you slap on a new pair, fine, just say so. I am hoping there are some out there who get maybe 10 days and 40 heat cycles out of them, maybe a touch less. If so, I could justify them.
If it really is, for everyone, four to five days on a set of Hoo Hoos, I would effectively TRIPLE my tire budget and go through six sets a summer.
That seems nuts to me.

Ah, the 40 HC Hoosier dream! If I get 25 out of a set of Hoosiers I am ecstatic. But the last 6-8 HCs are not particularly fast. If you have a great setup, and don't cord them, they still start to cycle out at around 20 HCs.
I have been running 245/315 Hoosiers on my GT3 for over a year, and on average I get 2 full weekends (4 days @ 4 HC a day) out of a set. I run an event a month, so one set of Hoosiers will get me through 2 months, maybe 3 if I take one off. Before that, I ran 245/295 on my 996, and found the wear about the same. So, right at 16 HCs before they get noticeably hard. Sometimes I run an extra day just to milk my money out of them. By then, I am usually at cords. I did try to run 1 set as long as possible, and got 30 HCs - but the last few were like driving on shoe leather. Not fun.
But, I wouldn't go back to MPSC - they take too long to get to temp, IMO.

[edit: I should add that with my setup, I don't typically have to flip the tires on the wheels as they wear pretty even. I just rotate side to side]

Himself, your tire budget is $275+ PER DAY. Seriously? Mine has been at about $75 per day on MPSC. For real? In the dumpster every 4 days, sometimes you stretch it a bit?
Wow.
They must be crack :-)
Anybody with a budget run them and get more days??

Sometimes you can stretch, but when you see cords, you have no choice...
FWIW, I don't always run sticker Hoosiers. Sometimes you can find smoking deals on 1-2 HC qualifying tires that get dumped after qualifying. I will snap these up every opportunity I get. Sometimes I buy up 2-3 sets at a time. I basically lose the golden laps, but for DE, I don't mind. That'll get me through 6 months or so. During that time, I keep my eyes peeled for more

I've done 38 hc's on kuhmo v710's but I do flip them. 18 hc one side and 20 hc other side. No cording yet and I drive to/fro to track. My camber is -3. Still plenty of grip. Did a 1:58:138(ncrc race) on 19th hc and 1:58:034(qualify time) on 18th hc. I didn't time my 20hc because mooty's laptimer died and he stoled mine but still fast : ). Mike

996, those Khumo's are the same price as Hoosier's and MPSC's. Do you run them because you get a bit more life than Hoosier's or what?
Again, I cannot justify Hoosier's if they are dumpster material after 4-6 days. Not when I can have fun on MPSC's for the same $ and over 12 days for sure.
Maybe a Khumo option is a possibility.
Why is it I basically never hear guys here in New England using Khumo's? Its the Cup or Hoosier's around here.
I am trying to remember that I do this for fun and there is no trophy for dropping a few seconds at three times the cost in the rubber department.
Thank-you very much for your feedback.

Only tried R6 once so far. Corded after 5 days. Roughly HC#28. Performance was lame that last day.
I'm back to Nitto for a spell with a new driving coach. Focusing on learning - not ultimate lap times. Later on I'll go back to the R6 and see how my lap times have improved at my local track.
Cheers,

if you can get hoosiers to 40HC, i am certain you are either very slow or you have incredible car control.
on avg, the first 10 HC is pretty addicting. then starts to fall off, at 15, it's really not all that good anymore.

Mooty, tell me seriously that you get two days out of Hoosiers, skate on them another day+ and on day three you throw them out?? For real?? Three days of track time and you toss $1300 worth of rubber??
Who on this board runs Hoosiers longer? I just can't believe there isn't a crowd that likes crack Hoosiers but has SOME budget? Mooty, you do like 40 track days a year, right? Do you really buy 10+ sets of Hoosiers a summer?
I am impressed if you guys can afford that but wondering if there might be a crowd that sees a way to get 8-10 days out of them. Are they that crappy after day 4??

===> i usually get 6 session per day. so i get two very good days. then day 3 is not bad, but they dont feel like R6 any more. kind like toyo RA1, and with each HC after 10-12, you feel it degrade eash successive sessions. pass 20 it's really slippery and not enjoyable any more. most of the hoosiers drivers wont drive them over 20 HC. you dont die, but they dont feel like the normal R6 whereas if you ran RA1 toyo's. EVERY SESSION (once you lose 1/2 the tread) feels the same and improve steadily until you cord.

==> pretty much. ask rmag or pj etc. but i dont always run hoosiers. only when 996flt6 or 171mph or karlooz is haunting me. other wise i run nitto/toyo's.

==> 35 days, dont scare me. i ran 8 sets of hoosiers + several sets of toyo's in 2008. and you guess it, wallet got light, wife got mad. so i cut back and did some BSR. now i think i will make my wife mad again. afterall she had one year to cool off. so its time to **** her off again. tires are the single most $$$ item on these cars. this year i'll try to run 1/2 hoosiers and 1/2 toyos.

==> i run hoosiers, but i never said i can afford them!!!! i eat ramen every day, i kid you not. my lunch budget is 2.25. that's two tacos and i eat lunch every other day. i dont eat bkfast other than cookies. i am serious.
you can get 30 HC out of hoosiers if you really want to, but there's no way in hell to get 8-10 days, even if you parked the car and just look at it. they really dont last that long. 5 session/day, 10 day = 50 session. absolute NO WAY. i love to be proven wrong in this matter, so i can save $, but i dont think 10 day is possible
