optimal tires
i have a 2004 gt3. from april to oct used as a daily drive. if things go well i will get 12 track days for DE. relatively new at this. any suggestions about tires would be helpful. i have searched the forums but am still not sure thanks much

I am sure you will get a wide range of tire suggestions here but i will offer you what i know and use.
I love the Nitto NT-01 R-com tire for track and street. I leave them on the car and drive to the track, track all day and drive home. I have been on track in the rain with half worn tires and had great fun. These tire give great grip for the price and you can run them down until the cords show. p.s.. The Nitto NT-05 is also a great street tire that holds up nicely on track, a little less grip but last longer. Note not the new NT-05R which is for drag racing.

Nitto 01 best bang for the buck. The only drawback is in the Nitto wet, traction is sketchy as well as the NT05. A good dual purpose street/track tire is the Yokohama AD08 235/295 Good wet/dry tire and much less expensive than the PS2

Many factors come into play trying to answer longevity of the NT-01s. I really try not to know how long they last, just drive then replace as needed. I would say for most people maybe 10-15 track days plus driving to and from the track on a set.
I would think two full sets for a season of HPDE. The rears wear around 2:1 from the fronts. Everyone's set-up, driving style, track surface, track config, and time on track per day are different so the above is just a reference point so lets not all get into a pissing match about what the "true" longevity of the tire is on track.

For a DOT tire....PS2 hands down.
For a R-comp DOT tire you can daily drive.....NT01 hands down best bang for the buck.
For a track only R-comp DOT......HoosierR6.
For a track only slick......well, if you get to that point, then you probably already have been through tire rehab and know the best drug

Hey Dell,
Here is a pic of the "LV Dell speed yellow special" at Button Willow running the Nitto NT-01s. Then off to Starbucks drive through on the way home from the track with the same tires.
Happy new year, hoping for a better one this year myself.

My take on rkirshner's question is that he wants a set of tires to put on the car and leave on the car for both daily driving and track.
The PS2 certainly fits that bill -- maybe others are also good, but the PS2 is a good choice, IMO.

I found PS2 was fine until I really started pushing it at the track, then I was cording the PS2 on the outside even though I have more than -2 deg of camber. The PS2 has a really thin tread cap on the edges and you can burn through it in no time when you really push the car.

Corsas are way better than the PS2 if going to do both. PS2s just melt away on a dry track. So having one set to do both is tough. PS2 are great and quieter street tires. Corsa is pretty good street and track both wet and better than PS2 in the dry. MPSC: OK on the street, marginal track wet, and the best dry track.
Corsa are the most expensive but to be able to get the most from a tire in all conditions I think the Corsa meets the test.

thanks all. i have the ps2 on now they seem good but at wgi i tend to slide around in the brake zones of turn 1 and 6 at wgi. yes i keep the tires on and do not change when i go to the track appreciate the help

I don't know WGI but for me, when PS2 got above 40-ish lbs then the rear of the car would move around under heavy braking. Drop pressures to 38 max and the car was happy. I usually aimed for 36f/38r hot with PS2.

I've tried Michelin PS2s, Michelin Pilot Sport Cups, Nitto NT-01s and Pirelli Corsas.
If street only, PS2 are great but the Bridgestones are good as well for less $$$. If track street, I like the Pilot Sport Cups best but the Pirelli Corsas are much better in the wet although they are a little less sticky in the dry.
I tried the Nittos and they last and last but they just don't have the grip of the Corsas or Cups especially under braking.
