Default K&N Air Filter for our cars does it work / fit?

I was wondering if anyone had installed a K&N air filter on their GT3? I recently ordered one but it didnt fit. Looked at the K&N website and what I ordered was what is showing on their site 33-2786 but was not correct for my MY04. Our cars uses a perfectly rectangular filter and not the one showing on their site. On their web site it is the turbo model one we need 33-2189.

Wondering if anyone else had this problem and if their airbox is the same rectangular one that I have? Also if this filter is worth changing and did you feel any increase in HP?

There are no performance or financial benefits to installing a K&N air filter in any modern Porsche. And you especially want to avoid using them in any vehicle with a Bosch hot-film mass air flow (MAF) sensor. The oil used on the filter has a habit of contaminating the sensor element and ruining the sensor.

I agree with Jason on this one. Replace the factory part with a new one when it needs it and drive...The snake oil will most certainly damage the air mass sensor at one point or another..
Good luck, Jerry

They're not worth the hassle, risk or money. If your dealer sees one in the car you will probably be told to remove it immediately.

Ditto on the above, just keep the stock filter fresh and you will be fine. There is no power to be found in the induction system unless you want to really spend some money or get an RS induction scoop to improve the ram air effect of the rear lid.

This is a bit of a wife's tale. The oil will only harm the MAF if the K&N has been REOILED by the end user incorrectly.

The factory applied oil is correctly done, and has no ill effects.

Most of the guys I know that are using them (100's) just get a new one when its time to clean them. Never an oil issue that way 'eh!

I found no benefit to using a K&N in my 996GT3. Given the money Porsche spends to make the max horsepower, I really doubt they would leave HP on the table for the price of a filter.

Ask this question: Assume the K and N filter can flow 2 x as much air. That's a good thing, right?

How much air can the engine consume - 3.6 liters x 8200 RPM. What if the OEM air filter can already supply 3 x that amount.

What benefit is flowing 2 x more than the OEM filter?

Oh, and one more thing, if the K and N can flow more air with a filter having the same surface area as the paper one, is it possible that it filters less?
Best,

Somebody recommended a BMC oiled filter to me when I got my GT3 which I installed. AT the start of the season at Autobahn I suddenlt lost power. The problem was oil on the air mass sensor. The eurosport guys cleaned it and it was fine but I suspect this is not the best upgrade.

Cheers

I've personally seen a lot of dirt in an intake tract due to a K&N.

I have a K&N in my RS America with an open airbox and the combo made a huge difference in this car. I have a BMC in my GT3 and it didn't really make any difference. FWIW, I DO NOT RE-oil either, toss and replace.

I used K & N for 3.000 miles in my 4s. There is no MAF contamination if filter is oiled properly (it comes oiled from the factory, no need to add extra oil). Besides cleaning MAF once in a while with keyboard spray will keep it fully functional. Note that in all high mileage cars, MAF should be replaced. Its not a great cost maybe >200$ and its a DIY.
What i noticed is that except the sound improvement it makes the car a bit "lazy" under 4.000 rpm

K&N will yield no gains. What your return-yield would be is a compromised stoichiometry. Stoichiometry has been optimised. Installing K&N in hopes to extract more performance than factory predefined statistics is nothing but "kitchen-sink engineering."

waste of money and definitely lets dirt into the engine. you can see it in a used oil analysis. Porsche wouldn't leave easy horsepower and torque on the table...think about it.
