Hi
viperbob installed a B&M short shift kit (with Evo link) in my '04 GT3. As I recall, he told me that in order to do so, some plastic part of the OE kit would have to be destroyed, so it was nonreversible. Can anyone confirm this one way or the other? I'd like to go back to the OE kit.
Thanks

I tossed the B&M out of my GT3. The bushings are the only part from the OE kit that were destroyed. You can either get new plastic busings (if possible), use the B&M bushings (possible with lots of grease, but a bit tight), or use the Evo needle bearings (my choice).

Joe, I did the same thing. I just replaced the entire assembly and sold the SSK to another Rennlister so they didn't have to worry about the install--pop off the two cable drop in and go! The assembly was something like $200 and much worth my time compared to disassembly and then reassembly. Plus I got some of the money back in the sale of the old SSK already in a shifter assembly.

Anyone know if the 997 GT3 kit will go in the 996? I drove a friend's 997 GT3 today, and really like the shift action of the 997 kit. Frankly, the 996 one may be similar, but it's been about a year-and-a-half since I put in the B&M.

Rob...I absolutely love it in my 996CAB but the tranny is different in the GT3 so much so that the SSK absolutely blows. Way too short and very hard to find that 2-3 shift.....especially at the track. The stock box in the GT3 is a thing of beauty.

Is there a DIY on the swap?

DIY for the SSK alone or for the entire assembly? I have done both the SSK only in my wife's 996 and the entire assembly in the 3. If you are talking the entire assembly it is SUPER easy and you could be in and out in under 30 minutes.

When you say kit are you talking the shifter itself or the entire assembly (the large black plastic housing with the shifter already install in it)???

Looks like I need to better educate myself. Haven't "played" with this car as I did with my RX-7s. Here's a pic of the two pieces I have. I have an Evo linkage, which, I assume (perhaps incorrectly), replaced the black piece.

Ah, now I see. What you have there is JUST the shifter and the OEM shift linkage. Looks like you have a disassembly/assembly project on your hands. As for what parts you need, maybe somebody that has done this can chime in. But I assume since you are essentially installing the same thing as a SSK but instead using a non-Short Shift Kit then all you would need is the parts that are being used to hold the B&M in place as long as they are reusable.

I too went back to OEM shifter. Save yourself the headaches and order the whole OEM assembly from the dealer about $200. It comes with the shifter, base and the orange cable adjustment tool to set the cable correctly.

You can also try the Ruf or BM undercar cable adjustment to shorten the shift. It only takes 10 mins to install.

That's probably what I'll be doing, but waiting on finding out if the 997 kit will go in. Drove a friend's 997 GT3, and love the feel of that shifter.
