Default Cruise Control Retrofit?

I bought my '04 GT3 in January '05, and have run it on the track for two seasons. I have decided to take it off the track, and have removed (and sold) my track equipment. The car will now see street use only.

Can cruise control can be retrofitted? I've already driven it a couple of times between San Francisco and Los Angeles, once down the I5 boring road. It would have been nice to have cc then. The trip down Hwy 1 was much more enjoyable.

I thought I ordered my car with cruise control (for the long drive to the tracks) but it showed up without it. Now I'm glad it fell of my order list unexpectedly as I like the no frills nature of the car. However, I did inquire about refitting it with the dealer after it arrived and the initial estimate of work and labor was ridiculous. Lots of different parts spread around the car per the tech.

If you do it I'd be interested to hear how it goes.

Good luck.

i believe that as of 2002 the wiring looms began to be custom made for each auto according to the individual option list.

It should be no problem and very inexpensive. At most (based on what's written in PET) you will need to change out the steering column switch assembly (MSRP $237.50), add the clutch pedal switch ($13.71USD) and use the PiWiS computer to add the option to one of the computer systems in the car. You might not even need a new column assembly but instead can get away with just replacing the caps & buttons? There is only 1 wiring harness for the MY04 GT3 and all your doing is controlling the electronic throttle-body, nothing is added to the engine compartment so the labor won't be very involved. Download a copy of the Porsche Electronische Teile (PET) and look for option M454, as best I can tell the only sections are 702-00 and 903-10.

Looks like Jason has more info on this than I or my sales person did. FWIW - My sales/tech person pointed out several different pieces in the engine compartment as well as the steering wheel assemblies and although I didn't get a written estimate, said it would probably be around $2000-$2500. If Jason is right then I guess it doesn't surprise me too much about the mis-information (sadly).

Like I said, if you do it I'd be interested in how it turns out. If it turns out to be as simple and cheap as Jason describes, I might be re-interested in the concept of adding it on post-delivery, trying it for a while, and removing it again if I don't like it...best of both worlds?

Regards,

I've passed Jason's comments onto my Porsche service tech. Awaiting his reply.

There is a big post on the www.renntech.org site about retrofitting cruise.
Navigate to RennTech.org Forums > Technical - 986 (Boxster,BoxsterS) >986 Boxster DIY

There is also a good post written by Richard Hamilton on the UK Porsche Club site www.pcgb.co.uk Go to Forums > 996 >Technical Articles

Got the retrofit done at the dealer where I had bought the car a couple of years ago. From the repair order:

Parts:
1 996-613-219-10-EWC, Column switch assy
1 PNA-721-043-00-040, Repair set K - #9600
2 PNA-721-043-00-063, Repair set 03 - #960
10 999-513-007-40, Tie-wraps ($2.45 ea!!!, what a crock!!)
1 PNA-721-043-00-122, Electrical housing #960122
$343 in parts, $225 in labor

NOTES: Installed column switch, and fabricated wiring harness. Coded and verified operations

If you kept your old steering column switch would you mind grabbing the part number from it and posting it here?

Reviving an old thread. Was there any coding/programming of the ECU involved in the retrofit?
