Shifting Gears 1-3-5
#2
As long as you are not lugging the engine (if the car will not increase speed when more throttle is applied and the engine RPM's are below peak torque which is about 5,000 rpm) you should be ok.

I think this is brilliant - on odd days of the month just use 1-3-5 and on the even days 2-4-6.
Just to be on the safe side, try to use reverse on odd days one month and even days the next.
If you leave the car parked in gear, you can economise on hand brake usage as well.
Gee, when you sell the car it will look and feel like its done half the milage it really has - why didn't I think of that?

Poor old GT3-002! FWIW, if it makes you feel better, I generally drive my daily driver (Lupo GTi) 1-2-6.
After second, I'm already beyond the legal limit for most day-to-day driving.

But really there is no point in this. If you are driving hard and revving the engine then you're giving up performance. If you are trundling along in traffic then you probably want to shift up as soon as you can to keep the revs down. By skipping gears you are running the RPM higher than necessary.
So either way there doesn't seem a sense to it.
And I don't even think it is the lazy way to drive. 1-3-5 are not easy shifts to make because of the arrangement of the gate. 1-2-3-4-5-6 is very natural for most drivers. Why even try to un-learn that? (Though I do regularly skip gears when down-shifting.)

I prefer the general 1-2-3-4-5-6 with short shift 1-2 (because 1 is so damn short),
and near redline in 2-5 (whenever I can!)
No, I do not save my car for the next guy or have seat covers on my seats...

You could always get a nice Tiptronic 996 / 997 & save all the effort of changing gear at all!
