Default Yokohama A048

Any feedback on these? I will use them for track and autocross only. The ony DOT will be to and from the event.

Get them or stick to Sport Cups?

Thanks

hmm I did have a link to a german PDF comparison. I think it said they had slightly more ultimate grip, but less feel than cups so harder to get the best from them. I considered getting a set, but they are very uncompetitively priced in the UK (was quoted equiv of 1500USD!).

Sorry, I've lost the pdf

It was a german tyre comparison the GT3 mk1. Corsas vs AO48s vs Cups and 1 other. In decreasing order of grip but increasing order of feedback it was 48s, cups then corsas. The corsas were a lot better in the wet than the cups.

Will try and find the pdf tomorrow as I think I may have it at work.

I like them. Not as much grip as Pilot Sport Cups, but i use them for autocross, DE and getting to and from the track. I have driven them in heavy rain too and they hold up quite well. Tire wear is also very reasonable, about 2500 miles on street and 1200 track miles and i have over 50% thread left. I have heard that RA-1s have better grip and threadwear, that's what i will be trying next after these sets of A-048s.

I ran MPSCs on a 1988 Carrera a few years ago and A048s on my Lotus Elise this year. Of course, they're different cars and tire sizes but I think the MPSCs were better overall. The Yoks lose their grip long before the tread is gone and they are scary in the wet. I know a previous post disagrees but I can tell you that, on worn A048s on a wet track, I was loose in spots at the Glen where I have never been loose before, and big time squirrelly under braking (even with ABS.) The Cups seemed to keep their grip until they were closer to treadwear. The MPSCs wore out on the outside edges while the Yoks wore out in the middle. This might have been alignment but I think this wear pattern is common.

My first ever R Comp tires, so I cant compare, very noisy for the first 2K Miles. MPSC are next.
So far 7 De's and they still look and feal good. OK on light rain.

Found the comparison :

http://www.nobleforums.com/images/on.../tires/gt3.pdf

Haven't got time to reread it, so theres every possibility that by posting it contradicts what I remember it saying

Ok, her it goes................

1. A048 grippy as hell but less feel, get's bertter as they wear. NOISY!!,
2. MPSC plenty of feel slightly less grip (especially when cold), good threadwear, expensive
3. RA1 very communicative, as if they are telling you when they are about to let go, excellent thread wear, if they only had slightly stiffer sidewalls! Best bang for your $$$.

I have driven all 3 makes on my GT3 and I would rank them as following: 1. MPSC 2. Toyo RA1 3. A048.

Can't compare the SO3 with an R compound tire. 3 laps and they are gone, this is when the R compounds start to stick!
I have tried

Ciao,

Johannes E.

What are the US prices for AO48s? Pirelli & Michellin have decided to have a laugh with their pricing in the UK so its becoming economic to self import.

What about S-03s?
_______
someone mentioned this. it's not r coumpound like others we are talking about. and if you want street tires, it's hard to beat michelin PS2.

my order of preference is idential to Mr. C4. MPSC doens't last long, but it has great feedback and very grippy. it takes one more lap than RA1's to warm up. RA1 last and last,if you shave them, they are ALMOST as good as MPSC... and you can go out and try set lap record on lap 1. it takes me 2 turns to warms it up.

DanH $299 for the rears Yokos $304 for cups

Up until now I have used Cups or Hoosiers. Just looking for something different. One really needs at least three sets but trying to do street, track, autocross with two. Really one, I try not to track the PS2s at all.

If you guys ever consider the Toyo RA1s, make sure you get them shaved. They are a totally different tire when they are shaved to 4/32s or less. This is the way we(and Wolf Henzler) run them on the World Challange cars. They tires last for about 5 heat cycles for us and after that they are still fast but not fast enough to remain competitive. They are awesome for DEs after that as that is what I use our take offs for.
