There's not a road racer who wouldn't give his right --- for a cup ride. That's a fact.
Gordon is a hell of a good driver, got his start in sprint cars and moved up. I'd say Tony Stewart is probably the best driver out there right now, reminds me of a young David Pearson, no fear at all.

Are you serious?
Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart, among other cup regulars, typically compete at the sharp end during road course events. This year at Infineon Stewart won, Gordon took pole, while at Watkins Glen Stewart won pole and the race! This is in spite of the appearance of the hired gun road racers like Said, Fellows, etc.
I can't stand NASCAR, but give these guys their due- a talented driver is a talented driver.

I'm no fan of NASCAR,..but if those guys were as good, they'd be in the cup series where the money is.

Jeff Gordon drives a 996TTX-50 as "his favorite road car", as I heard him say following one of those NASCAR races. Don't know about Stewart.
Even junior F1 teams would pay millions for Gordon if that were possible.
Maybe not the $70MUSD that Schumacher gets.

A lot of people seem to think Nextel Cup is somehow lower budget than F1. It's a lot closer than you would think. An F1 team has what 1-2 cars , a Nextel Cup team will have 2 cars for each track that's a lot of race cars, and there is nothing low tech about them other than the carbs.
I think Tony Stewart just bought a Lambo.

The fact that nascar drivers make a ton of money has nothing to do with it... just because they can drive in a circle doesn't mean they can drive on a road course.
Michael Schumacher has been asked in interviews "now that you've dominated Formula 1, why don't you come to America and try Nascar or the Indy 500?" His answer was something to the effect "that would be silly, racing on circle tracks is dangerous, and it doesn't really take any skill, it's more for the fans than for the drivers."
If I had more time I'd find the exact quote, but I think that pretty much sums it up...

I'd say there is a lot of skill driving a car 200+mph with fifty of your closest friends inches from you on all sides...No down force, narrow tires, tons of HP......Not just anyone can do that, like the sport (I don't) or not. If some of these road race guys could get a cup ride, they'd jump all over it.......But for MS to say there is no skill, well his a FOS as he is ugly

pcar, you seem to think that the cup drivers have no skill other than running in circles for hours. So how do you account for the fact that guys like Gordon and Stewart are fully competative and often beat the hired-gun roadcourse drivers like Said, Pruett, Fellows, etc? Or are you just conveniently ignoring reality?

No...FOS on his OPINION of OTHERS skills..... Has he ever been in a NASCAR? Funny, there's a show with Paul Tracy , he goes for a NASCAR tryout......And SUCKS. Now just so you understand, I'm not saying PT is MS. But he's a pretty fair racecar driver......

Clearly, many of the Cup regulars can't drive road courses very well, but that doesn't mean you can generalize accross the entire population. Some of them, particularly Gordon and Stewart, are extremely competitive road racers.
