Default Anyone have their seat backs painted?...

can it be done properly? I have seen a ton of painted console's on ebay. I am not into a lot of bling. But the seat backs do look good?

Are they painted, dyed or powder coated?

Thanks

The factory paints them. Any good body shop can do it for you for way less than the factory charges.

Rgds,

Thanks,

The guy that runs Jim Ellis paint shop said they could not be painted, that they had to be dyed? Said the you can't paint plastic. Well no how the hell did they paint the bumpers????

I'd bet Eric @ bumperplugs.com will do this for you. They specialize in painting Porsche plastic bits.

They can be painted, but need to be dissasembled first to do it properly. BTW that is only if you have gt3 or sport seats, if not then the backs are leather or vinyl and would have to be dyed and would look silly IMHO

It is my understanding they mix paint special for flexable materials such as plastic, bumpers, etc.. There is an additive which makes it somewhat flexable. And I think the paint is actually a dye, just looks like paint and is applied in the same way. When all is said and done, you should have no problem "painting" the backs.

You should ask him how they paint bumpers then, the guy seems clueless. Parts such as bumpers and bumperettes get painted with a flex additive in the paint to prevent cracking, the consoles in the car and the seatbacks sure can be painted, thats what the factory does.

Rolo, what kind of seats do you have? Are they like a regular 996 Carerra seats? Do they have a small hard panel in the center of the backs?

it's gotta be the sport seat since it's a GT3. any bodyshop can do it the only difference is quality.

I dont understand it. Porsche offers them painted in any color. They are plastic and can be primed and painted with regular automotive paint. Maybe the guy at Ellis was an imposter, because he sure doesnt know anything about Porsches or paint.
There must be some other painters in Atlanta.

they certainly can be painted - if hardback.
But, the seat must be taken apart - this is not cheap in labor

Mine came painted silver from the factory, in a black car. I didn't order the car, it was in stock, so that's what I got. Also have the silver console. Don't like either one - and, it only took me one game of golf to scratch the seat back. I'd leave it black.
