I've done one at my shop so far. If you have any specific questions on the procedure I would be happy to assist.

As long as the tech knows what they're doing with that motor, any other damage/unusual wear should be fairly obvious to them when it's apart. I would just make sure the servicing tech knows that any other issues should be brought to your attention. If you are going to a good service department, all of this should occur without any prodding on your part. I am a firm believer in the power of a little bribery, in the form of maybe donuts/bagels for the techs or a bottle of reasonable wine for the service advisor. Never hurts to butter up those that you'll be trusting with your baby a bit, especially if you don't already have a good working relationship with them.

phaedrus,
Thanks for the advice, I already took them to lunch last week. I've been there almost every day just to visit, take lots of pictures and generally keeping on eye on things.

I'm thinking of having a dealer in Chicagoland do it as they've done one already and have more experienced technicians. Only downside is I won't be there to "watch" but then I hate it when someone wants to watch me work...hoping Porsche will help to get it there and back. Don't want to drive it for 6+ hours on I-80 and especially with unpredictable winter like weather! (You'd think PCNA would want to keep long time P cars customers happy- does it matter to them I've bought a GT3 and Cayenne within 1 year and got the first one back in 1971?)

I believe the Porsche company you refered to is no longer with us, sad to say.

So far it sounds like Porsche is going to make it right as they should for a car like this. Yes, the first car was purchased from Porsche+Audi division of VOA. Must be the German genes as I've also driven Audis since 1979 (can't live without a Quattro in Iowa!), my dad drove Porsches from 1971 till just before his death in 1992 and my uncle had my cousin pick up his 1969 912 in Germany at the factory when he was in the service. And of course, my only sister had a 944 and still has a pristine 1973 914 she's had since 1975!
The dealer in Chicago already has done one so that makes me less nervous...
