NJ-GT: Why do you feel that potential 997 GT3 buyers are limited to current 996 GT3 owners?

NJ-GT: Why do you feel that potential 997 GT3 buyers are limited to current 996 GT3 owners?

This is certainly an interesting thought. As a first time Pcar owner I was shocked at how few GT3's were imported and sold, I honestly thought it would have been their no 1 selling car. Shows how little I know about the purchasing public!

I think that the GT3 was the next step for many M3 owners, but the new V8 M3 which will make just over 400hp, may well be the car that current M3 owners look to next.

Personally I'm not likely to buy a 997 GT3 as I think it makes more sense using mine as my track day car till the warranty runs out. The depreciation over the next three years will mean I'll loose around $45K, while if I traded up next year I'd loose 30K for the pleasure! Thus keeping the car till the end of the warranty is the cost effective way to go. Besides the thing is 10 seconds a lap faster than me, so I figure that gives me around 3 seconds a lap to make up over the next three years!

When I'm out of warranty I'll see how far off the 998 is, and if there is to be a featherweight special. The thought of 500hp & 2,500lbs in a car I can drive to and from the track in seems like about to as close to perfect as I could get, I'm certain that I'll never need anything more than that!

Hard to confirm today, cars get built to suit demand not quota.

Macfly, that's a tall order. Is that really your expectation for the 998 GT3?

This was my first P-Car as well, I toocame from an M3. Still not sure what I am going to do. I may keep the GT3 for a bit, but I always loved BMW's and I may go back to the M3 with the V8.

I do have to say, that the GT3 is an amazing machine, the closest car I can compare it to is the e30 M3. The e30 M3 gave me chills from the moment I started it up to when I shut it down. Both cars are very raw and very fun to drive.

That's the feeling I have now with my GT3. I was driving down the street yesterday and actually started laughing out loud to myself because I was so happy.

Gentlemen,

Dont know about the US but the GT3 for the ROW will be shown to the world early next year (march and available from MY06 (september). Contary to an earlier post I made there will be an RS varient in about 3-4 years time.

Someone metioned money and the engine earlier, the GT1 engine costs about £35K to produce mainly due to the use of Titanium and bespoke parts, must admit that I can't see this engine making it into the 997GT3 in light of porsche drive for profit.

I suppose we will just have to wit for March to see who is right...

Dont think you will see a GT3 in the US as it failed miserably in the sales chart, more people seem to be more interested in top down motoring than ***** out driving I am afraid.

Ill Stick with my RS if it is all the same to you.

The "***** out" drivers in the New World make up such a small percentage that it's not even a blip on the PAG sales radar...rather unfortunate and sad but true...

I wish Porshce would just say FFFF it and send them over here for us that do want them to enjoy.

It is really sad that Porsche is saddled with the demographic they have to satisfy from the standpoint of us posting here.

The typical buyer of the popular cabriolets is more interested in their "image" as a sports car person than in really being a sports car person. They really wanted a Lexus convertible, but the Porsche beckoned because it was more of a sports car in the image department.

Porsche responds by saying: "hey you can have both with Porsche". So the stereos, leather options etc. keep coming since there are more customers for those than say something like a Limited Slip Differential or a Dry Sump Engine.

Most of the reason I post here at all is to try to keep the markets interest up in the technical stuff I am interested in, probably peeing into the wind.

We lose, life sucks

bit off base on that one old chap, they only planned to bring in 750, but the total sold will be well over 900, possibly even a 1,000. Selling a full 30% more of anything than you originally planned to isn't a failure in my book. I'd be over the moon if I'd done that this year!

There most likely will be a US GT3, but expect it with options like sunroof, sat-nav, "sports seats", back seats etc - cash cow. It's the GT3 RS the US won't be getting (again), that'll have the dry-sump, race seats and cage - true homologation special.

Actually I'm not too sure about engines, but logic suggests having a 3.8l or 4.0l dry-sump engine would make more sense in the GT3RSR, making it more class competitive, meaning the GT3 RS holomogation must also have a similar engine. Leaving the 3.6l dry-sump as a supercup engine for 2005, which requires no homologation. I speculate the 2006 GT3 Cup will use a 3.8l direct injection wet-sump engine, same as that's going into the next GT3...

Well, all of this wet sump sunroof & sat nav stuff will have the very nice effect of making our cars all the more special, which I think is actually rather good news! My fingers are crossed for the 'dumbing down' of the next GT3, as it'll surely make ours the one to have!
