The new president can change the policy. But the RS did not cross the pond since DOT will not certify a car with a rollcage.

In some markets the GT3 RS is delivered without the roll cage installed. That wasn't even an option in North America. IMO Schwab's promise ended when he left but at least we got the '04 GT3.

There was more than just the roll cage that DOT would have issue with on the RS. After all the mods Porsche would have need to make to get the RS into states you would have something close to base GT3.

Anyway I would hope PCNA would stand behind what Schwab had said in the past, if they don't I would raise a stink about it. I for one would like to see the best Porsche can offer over here at the sametime everyone else recieves them. If it hurts the value of my current car so be it, it is a car not an investment anyway.

We got the GT2 and the Carrera GT. It could have been worse.

Bill: Other than the roll cage, what do you think Porsche would have to change to get DOT approval on the GT3RS? If Ferrari could get the CS variant of the 360 approved I don't see why Porsche couldn't get the RS approved. If they were still honoring Schwab's promise that is.

Just a thought, did I read somewhere that the RS version is a lot more expensive than the usual GT3? If that's true, would we pay the premium for it? I think I saw an article showing its price as $173K US - but that probably included VAT since it was in a British magazine I think.

Bob - the base price for the RS is 20% more than GT3, so it would've been US$120k...

Dear Bob,
The GT-3RS sells here for about 200,000 CHF or around 160K USD at today's exchange rate.
I believe they only made a couple of hundred anyway. Switzerland was only allocated a small number. I know of three people with them and three more for sale (new).
Ciao,
Adrian

Maybe we should raise a stink about the lack of sportiness in the base models...

Steve,

I don't think the ROW seats have ever been crash tested, which is why they aren't an option on the GT3. I'm not sure the plexi rear window is legal, although plastic windows have certainly used on convertibles. Since the front bumper cover is a different part and the hood is lighter, PCNA would have probably had to submit to another round of crash testing to get DOT approval. This is pretty expensive for a low volume car and may have made the whole thing unprofitable.

Karl: I think the DOT requires 6 cars crashed which would tend to support your theory. Not that Schwab said that would be a consideration when he made his promise about special models coming to the US.

Wow! 6 cars, I didn't know it was that many. Can you imagine destroying 6 CGTs in order to get them DOT approved? I hope they were at least able to salvage the engines, which I hear are around $150K new.

I know I'm in the minority here, seeing how many white cars there are in the color poll, but the thing that would put me off the RS is that boy racer arrest me now paint job.

I would honestly rather have the car in a more sedate and stealthy color, so in answer to the question of would I pay 20% more for an RS, no. I'd spend less than 10% extra doing the suspension package from Gert, and leave it at that.
