Default SCCA class for autocrossing GT3?

May try out the next local SCCA autocross. What class would the GT3 be in? It IS a "stock" car. I remember doing mods on my 914 30 years ago and it really moved up classes in SCCA...

Wrong...
The GT3 is banned from Stock classes as SCCA is worried it can beat the reigning Z06;
and b/c it costs twice as much they don't want that to happen b/c it will hurt participation and make loads of Z06 autocrossers mad

However, you can run it in ASP, where you could be very compettive locally, but at the National level you will get trounced by modified Z06s or face the equivalent but marginally faster GT2.

ASP

Car is not competitive in that class at national level. Rob Boynton brought a modified GT2 last year with no chance for trophy.

ASP is dominated by modified Z06s. You can fit wider rubber in the Z06 and that car has a lot more torque, which is very important at low speed (auto-x). There is no chance to get the GT3 in the powerband in an auto-x, because auto-x are events were you run 25-55mph (low to mid revs in 2nd gear).

However at the track is a different history. The 380Hp GT3 Cup keeps up with the 600Hp C5R.

Did the GT3 move from ASP to SS as recommended? I cannot find any action announced in the Fastrack News.

I dont think the GT3 will stay that close to a C5 Z06 with 600hp and 500+ torque with an equaly good driver...no way...

I agree, the GT3 RSR - faster than the Cup languished quite a ways back from the vettes at Le Mans...

The GT3 RSR & the Corvette C5R are in two different classes at Le Mans. The C5R runs in GTS and the GT3 RSR runs in GT. The GTS class allows for many more modifications than the GT class. GTS cars are true racecars where GT cars are still somewhat based on street cars. The C5R will always be much faster than the GT3 RSR, but IMHO it is not even fair to make a comparison between the GT3 RSR and the C5R because they are not built from the same rules basis.

Chris

Yes the GT3 is now classified in SS for SCCA Auto-X. If you haven't, be sure to check the rules before you mod your car as something simple can move you to ASP.

Thanks, 85Gold. I have heard that the GT3 is now in SS with the Corvettes and I can see the recommendation to the SCCA BOD to make the change, but I could not find the change announced as adopted in writing anywhere in Fastrack. Not a big deal for me, but I hope to do a winter event on Saturday in MD and it'd be nice if I had a clue!

Chris

Yes I have not seen it in Fasttrack either but in perusing the SCCA forums I have not gotten any indication that it is not a done deal. I have not gone online to read the 2005 rule book in pdf format as I have a dialup modem and do not have 24 hours to download it. I see you are in Philly, I have a daughter in Hershey, PA so I am going to the Parade this year, free room and board. My first SCCA AutoX is the 15/16 of January.

Good luck Saturday

Peter,

Yes, I've seen all the posts that assume that the move of the GT3 to SS is a done deal. One of the guys running the Philly SCCA chapter also confirmed SS to me in an e-mail, and attached the Fastrack where he thought he had seen it listed, but I could not find it there! I have a fast connection to the Internet and did download the '05 rules, but they still show the GT3 in ASP. The BOD action was supposedly after the rules were published.

I hope to attend the parade, too. I am driving to the midwest about that time, but I think I can still make the parade. Good luck with your autocross!

Chris
