It finally happened...
Well....it finally happened. So for those of you that think since you're GT3 is a street only car and is immune to coolant pipe failure, think again.
Since our GT3 never sees the track, I've been putting off pinning the pipes. In fact, I JUST had the conversation with our mechanic about doing them and said "we should do these at some point, we're at 100k miles now...lets look at later this summer when things die down a little" (my schedule is swamped right now). So...I was driving on a back road on the way to an appointment and all of a sudden the Low Coolant light flashes on... there is nowhere to pull over, so I ease off the gas a bit - temp was fine at around 180deg, then it started shooting up. Luckily before it hit 250, I came to a shopping plaza so I shut it off, pulled in and called AAA and my mechanic.
Coolant was all over the back of the car and dripping from the engine. Just to help cool it, I went into the store and bought some coolant to pour in. when the flatbed pulled the car up, it all dumped out! but at least it might have cooled a little while it was sitting for an hour waiting.
So...word to the wise...get your pipes done, don't put it off any longer!

Bummer, but sounds like its fine all things considered. Really seems like its not really a matter of IF, but more WHEN with the coolant lines.

-belt
-flywheel bolts
-rms
-engine mounts (putting in RSS)
anything else?

I honestly can't believe there are still cars running around out there without the coolant pipes fixed. By now, these cars are 15 years old and all will fail soon enough. I had one blow in front of me at that track at over 130mph which could have been bad. The 991 Gt3 behind me wasn't so lucky.

I've had multiple Pm's for the parts list for while you are in there so I'll post it, see attached.
Gearbox was rebuilt by Copans a year earlier so some of the items were replaced like clutch etc.

The thing to remember regarding the coolant pipes is that that Porsche used glue for the coolant pipes.
At some point the hoses will need to be replaced. Maybe the hoses should be replaced proactively and pinned.
If the hoses are in good shape, eventually the glue fails. It will fail on every Mezger. I have tried my best to just treat the hose replacement and pinning as a maintenance item.
I have a 2004 996 GT3 and a 2004 Turbo Cabriolet. I had my Turbo done also, even though it never goes on track. Some of the turbo hoses were very tight and the glue was strong. Other hoses were starting to get loose.

Yeah, I have been putting this off too..
I need to find a shop that I trust to do the job. (Not the "Hey while we have the car let's swap out EVERYTHING so I can send my kid to proctologist school"" guy or the "I'll get to is real sooooon" guy )
