I did the same with my 6GT3 with LWFW. Was caused by a range two over rev. Got third while reaching for fifth at Pocono. Better the clutch than the top end of the motor.
was that a new pressure plate with the latest revision number from the dealer?
It looks from the pictures that you got one of the bad 3.8 RS pressure plates where the revised design came with rivets on those bands that failed and required yet another update to a revised design with bolts like the original early 3.6 pressure plates? I think all the 3.8 pressure plates with rivets were recalled and replaced and the new "4.0" design went back to bolts like the old school 3.6 unit.
Maybe I'm crazy here but the first time I did my clutch / FW I kept my old pressure plate because it was right when they had just figured out the weakness with the revision for the 3.8 cars.
Last year I finally replaced the pressure plate and was sure to get the absolute latest revision of the part number and double checked for bolts so that there was no issues.
I have seen 3 GT3's and 2 Caymans with LWFW do the same thing. Every time it was a big downshift that caused it. We have a Cayman in the shop right now that did it and the owner kept driving it. We just put a new bell housing in because the straps had almost sawed the front of the bellhousing off.
Not saying you did a big downshift, but they are designed to save the motor when you do. It could be it was the old design as Andy indicates.
We replaced the case on a GT3 trans last year from an incorrectly installed LSD that put to much side loaded on the pinion shaft and elongated the hole the bearings sits in so the bearing fell out! the cases are definitely not cheap.
I bought the LWFW assemply new ~2.5 years ago, the day code shows 2012. There have been no money shifts, although I have run the car to 8300rpm.
Is there as real recall on these? Whose is it? Porsche or Sachs? Is the PP replaced? The original one in the car had a day code of 2003, and was in good shape. The are both Porsche parts as opposed to just Sachs.
mmuller: I will be replacing the bellhousing - got one on order - $1400, the current one was almost cut off. I also suspect that a couple of synchros will be tired as well, will know better when I take it all apart.
