Radar Detector what do you like?
I know how this may go we all have our favorites. The PO of my 04 C4S cab had a K-40 installed. I thought "awesome" but I keep getting a lot of false alarms from what must be blind spot sensors and adaptive cruise control. I can turn off K band, but it is still highly used in my area by the good guys in blue. In my SUV I have a newer Rocky Mountain detector and it works well but still occasionally goes off with what I know is either Blind Spot or Adaptive. Valentine says their newest detector has digital processing to prevent these specific false alarms. I am not sure if you can really cancel these as false if they operate on K band.
A side note, I really like the idea of the K-40 installed but with the top down it is hard to hear the speaker and see the LEDs on the dash.
Thanks in advance for you knowledge and experience.

Its been forever (probably 2001-ish) since I've done it but at one time my friend and I put a top of the line Escort/Passport on the dash next to a V1. The V1 was better. Later on I bought a used Escort (8500 I believe), from a friend at a price too good to pass up. It was garbage. To date I've only gotten two speeding tickets, and both times that abomination was in the car. Eventually I contacted support and they offered to recondition it for $100. I opted to throw it away. Maybe things have changed, but if/when I buy another one I'll get a V1 - partially because Mike Valentine is pretty involved in the Porsche community and brings some of his collection to local events.

At one time both V1 and Escort offered a 30 day satisfaction guarantee. I remember I went with my friend to pick his V1 up (their offices are/were here in Cincinnati) and they encouraged buying both and comparing them side by side. I remember being impressed that they were that confident in their product. If the offer still stands, give that a shot.

I did a Rennlist search and nothing came up. I also did a google search and most seemed product supported. I have been happy with Rocky Mountain but with more cars with with blind spot and adaptive cruise I keep seeing more false K band alerts. I was just hoping my 996 brethren could give me some insight before I drop 3-$500 bucks on a new detector.

I had older V1 (purchased 7-8 years ago) that I ended up selling for decent amount last year due to false alarm from lane change assistance features on newer cars. My unscientific recollection is that Audi and Honda were the worst cars to be near with V1, as it would set off with 5-9 bogeys. The one I bought last year eliminates most of (still get a few here and there) false alarms.

Removed the K40 in the 996 and replaced with a V1. Could not be happier as have been running V1's for over ten years!

Whatever you get, make sure it's updated (current), and that you have flexibility with what bands you can disable. Now that cars are dripping with radar noise (adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning...), for example, being able to disable laser if it's not used in your market is essential...otherwise, you will either ignore or turn off the detector.

I've been using a V1 for about 10 years and the only complaint that I have is that the cost to get it "updated" costs about as much as getting a new one. So i just find myself manually pushing the mute button to get rid of the annoying signals its picking up from all the lane changing, blind spot, etc... features that some of the new cars have.

With my V1 -- probably over 17 years old now -- while it alarms on other radar sources other than LEO I don't mind. I use the false alarms to remind be to remain situationally aware and this means more that be on the look out for smokey bears. An accident will ruin your day just as fast as a ticket.
Around town I don't use the V1 that much. I mean what's the point of speeding in town? Just end up at the same stop light as everybody else.
On the open and I mean *open* road I crank the sucker up to "11". I want to hear that above anything else.
One still needs to remember the detector doesn't make one's car invisible to radar. Might add that it has been my experience over the years being aware of bear traps and radar speed signs the Porsches are not that good a radar reflector but they catch the eye of the LEO and that's what counts. If the radar gun alarms you can almost bank on the fact unless you are being passed by something way more exotic you will be pulled over.
Don't have a smart phone but I don't think I would rely too much on Waze. Using a smart phone while driving is dangerous and around here I watch CHP motorcycle cops sneak up on cars and glance inside to try to catch the driver using a phone.
Also, I have watched the CHP in action on I-580 near me and they like to stake out a place and after a citation or two move on down the road an exit or two. Or change sides. As a result Waze is always behind the curve.
My recommendation is V1.
On a related note if you want to mount the unit out of sight be aware V1 emits the lowest radar signal and is the one least likely to be detected by a LEO and his radar gun (which can act as a radar detector detector). Often on the highway I'll catch a radar signal and find out it is coming from either another passenger vehicle or a big rig. With a handheld CB radio I give the big rig driver a head's up that his radar detector is detectable. For professional drivers I think it is against the law to use a radar detector.
I've never had one report he picked up my V1.
