Having said that, there is something called 'agency relationship', and it would apply to a certified mechanic(dealer or no, ASE certifications are reliance on a standard of care). So, as an example, if a ASE cert mechanic took the sump pate off, checked for ONLY those things I specified, and failed to note a clearly obvious D chunk crack, then they have failed in their agency relationship, no matter that I did NOT specify 'examine each cylinder wall for oddly D shaped cracks'. This is an area where some shops have refused to do a PPI because they don't want to get caught up in the drama of doing their JOB right.

I can also attest that you can overpay for a PPI. My first p-car PPI consisted of a dealer in CT doing a walk around and charging me for invasive surgery.
I wish I had a picture of the look on Jake's face when they started crying. Now that would make good internet. Enjoyed getting to see your operation today Jake. Very cool!

No, the crybaby was a male... He called back today wanting to do more work, but I told him that he had his chance, and he could pay to have the car shipped home. I give people one chance, if they show me true colors early on, its better for everyone. His VIN has now made the blacklist, so when another shop with lower standards does the work that we refused to do, then they'll have no warranty on the IMS Bearing they will install, which will fail due to debris contamination. Yes, I warned him about this.
The shop are the professionals. They should seek out the training to understand what the PPI should entail, which we go over explicitly in our technician 101 classes. Its sad that an owner would have to dictate to a shop what to do during a PPI.
That said, I am definitely going to have a "how to buy a 986/996" online class very soon. I am done with free phone consults from guys calling us 10X per day with the same questions, or wanting reassurance about their tentative purchase. These people will never be our customers, and if they want to learn what we know, it'll cost 299.00 for a 4 hour class. At the end of that class they will be forwarded our extensive PPI checklist, which is worth its weight in gold alone.

The four states of reality for (seemingly most) prospective 996 owners considering an inspection:
1. "I'm gonna get the best damn PPI ever!"
2. "F**k! How much?!? No, f*#k that!"
3. "Here's 50 bucks. Can you put it up on the lift real quick and look for leaks?"
4. (6 months and 3K miles later) "*#%^!!! I got taken! Why didn't you find this during the PPI?"

Hold up. What's it printed on? "Forwarded" suggests it's coming via email, and those don't weigh much at all.
(I don't think anyone can hit me with a wrench this far away...)

I will stick to Japanese cars from now on I think.
PPI involves walking to the car, checking that tires are inflated, check engine oil, check coolant, check that there are no warning lights or weird noises when driving. Pay the man, drive off.

At least we can now trust that OP has a good reputation:

I've learned to doubt nothing where Jake is concerned. He likely has a national network of Certified Bitchslap Installers.
We also know that he had some familiarity -- since lost, apparently -- with lower case letters.

There was only one shop that I called that quoted me a full on PPI (leak down and all) and that was one of Jake's authorized "The Solution" shops (I would have used them, but the deal near them fell through). No others were willing to drop the sump either and, frankly, all but one of the sellers I spoke to was really ok with the idea of having it dropped.

Holy ****. If that's OP and it probably is given his profile here on Rennlist, he lives about 10 minutes from me.

See?? And you thought Kalash was a great spook. Amateur, I say.
Why don't you be neighborly and drop by the good Mr. Gladfelter's place and offer him some pate and a milkshake?
Maybe not, he might shout at you.

About 90% of them... It will only get worse, and worse, too.
I refuse to become flexible enough in my delivery of information to properly interface with these people. I tell them exactly what they need to hear, exactly as they need to hear it, for things to sink in, for reality to hit.. If they start crying, or whining I generally get pissed off and just give up on them.
This year is worse than ever. Someone shed tears yesterday because their 996 failed my pre- IMS retrofit evaluation. Literally started crying. Then they got pissed off because I wouldn't lower our standards to perform the work. Sorry, no means no, and fail means fail here.
