Is the 964/993 the new 996? While our 996 prices are slowly creeping up. The actual sales prices (not listing prices or asking prices) of 964s and 993 are slowly sinking into the sunset. Here are some figures pulled today from ebay. These are only auctions in which the vehicle actually sold. It does not use cabs, 4S, turbos, or targas...only C2 coupes.
Of 23 that sold the average price was $43.2k But that included 4 that were over $50k.
11 sold for under $40k, 6 for between $40 and $45k, 2 between $45k and $50k, and 4 over $50k.
Of the 11 under $40k, the average price was $33.6k.
Of the top three prices...$79k...$74k...$69.3k the mileage was 16k, 24k and 18k.
Do not be surprised if eventually the prices for the first of the water cooled and the last of the air cooled reach common ground.

Hey I used to be one of those guys who turned my nose up to water cooled Porsches, and now I own a 996. Most likely the "purists" are coming around now, realizing how good the 996 really was, and accepting that watercooled 911's are here to stay and it's never going back.
That said well maintained low mileage air cooled 911's will always have value. But sometimes so much value that you can't enjoy the car since it's too much of a collectors item.

And it's 88k MILES so erm 140k (ish). Will be doing a transmission fluid change this weekend as she has a whine (not loud) under throttle load. Could be the pinion bearing (and will check for silver 'gunk' north of the drain plug) but thought I'd do the obvious and simplest thing first and see what results.
I used to have a '74 911S Targa.. but her old age and my fear of taking her out in the wet meant I wasn't drivng her much so I've made the jump to this lass.

Burning Brakes
Box of Chocolates
Model: C2
Model Year: 1999
Color: Black
Interior Color: Black
Mileage: 89,234
Transmission: 6-spd
Notable Options: 014 (Sports Options Package 030, 220, 375, and 376) which includes LSD
Notable Upgrades: Euro GT3 seats.
Service History/Manuals: I am 3rd owner. Came with 3 keys, manuals, set of 1999 Tech Manuals (expensive), and window sticker. Possibly had new clutch installed prior to second owner, but no documentation. Some service records from second owner. Carfax includes multiple entries for service. Appeared well maintained as far as changing the oil.
Condition of vehicle: Car was a “bring a trailer” Craigslist deal from a local seller. Battery was not being charged and car could not be driven any distance without stalling due to loss of electrical power. I was able to hear the engine run, but did not drive it or get a PPI. Crazy I know. Previous owner (PO) installed new battery, and it would die. He installed a new alternator. Car ran a short time and then battery began to die again. He decided to sell it at that point. I trailered it home and check connections associated with alternator and grounds. Found a bad connection from the battery to the body. Cleaned everything, charged battery, check voltage drop to positive connection at back of alternator (approx. 0.3v drop) and installed new alternator (the new alternator PO installed also went bad from the bad ground). Car runs great now.
PPI: I didn’t even drive it! Trailered it home.
Recommended maintenance: I will do an engine out in a few months to replace RMS, IMS with LNE Solution, check clutch, 160 degree thermostat, upgraded oil pressure piston and spring, chain pads, and anything else I find while I am “in there”. Some minor things like blinker return, console latch, some missing trim clips, etc. are being fixed as I find them. Original taillights had stress cracks, like the wide body tail lights often get. I replaced them with LED tail light assemblies. I also polished the front headlights with a Sylvania headlight restoration kit.
IMS Bearing Status: Apparently original.
Asking Price: 15,000 (when initially listed on Craigslist)
Purchase Price: 11,500
Purchase Date: March, 2017
Where Purchased: Greenville, SC
Private Party or Dealer: PP
General Notes: I took a chance on a “box of chocolates”. Looks like I got a good milk chocolate with cashews in the middle instead of one of those dark chocolates with the nasty goo. Car was originally purchased by Michelin Research and Development (Spartanburg SC) from Brumos Porsche in Florida. Michelin installed a bolt in roll cage and Euro GT3 seats. They drove it as a tire tester for 42k miles over 14 years. Second owner bought it and drove it primarily between Greenville SC and Spartanburg SC up and down I85 for 2 ½ years. He put 47k miles on it. Roll cage was removed when Michelin sold it. Has spent its entire life in South Carolina.
