Mine sure likes to be babied while cold. Growing up with 90s Saabs, I get the drill. The car isn't meant to be a performance car until warm, then it's slick like you'd expect from a pcar.

Notches:
There are no notches in any of the shifters. The "notchiness" mentioned must come from the shifter forks in the transmission.Perhaps the shifter cables?

for sure, at first mine was really bad but then i played around with the cable adjustments and found where it was not as notchy, i think if i screwed around with it more i could find even a better spot

I'm using the stock shifter and when cold, the only problem I had was shifting into 2nd gear. Sometimes it would pop out even though it felt like I had it in gear. So, I now shift 1st to 3rd for the first few miles when cold and then as the tranny warms, no issues with 2nd gear! Cheapest fix ever. Thanks Mike from Power Tech in NJ for the recommendation!

IF you are rerfering to a 6 speed?
I suggest you read more about 2nd gear pop out. You have a major repair in your future. Unless you fit the latest version of the detent.
The cause is the teeth on the 2nd gear dog ring are wearing down. Without a prompt remedy,2nd will become unusable.
The detent is a hack but it is a quick ,inexpensive and easy job. Discuss with Erik Johnson and read California Motor Sports site for more.

Going to the shop today. He had mentioned the detent on the phone but I was unaware of the importance of it. I will ask again when I'm there today.

Just be careful with which detent. The older design is not good. The newer one is O.K. Same price.See CMS for more.

Will do. The shop is really good and the owner presents regularly at PCANJ events. I will ask to make sure. Thanks for the info, really helpful to a noob.

can anyone identify this shifter? It came out of my 996 turbo. It has a few mods/cuts out of the original 996 unit.
I Took it out to install a 997 shifter.

It looks like the Agency Power one that was in my car. Mine had a logo on it. Its also the most generic, chinese copied design so it might be a $30 one from ebay.
