Value of 3.4 motor
I know a guy with a motor still in his MY2000 Carrera who's planning an LS1 engine swap. Motor has 115k but says he has paper work showing a rebuild 40k miles ago. Engine has a new LN ceramic bearing and water pump. Can be tested while still in the car. Asking $5,500. Eastern Massachusetts. Sounded pretty cheap to me. Especially if you're in possession of a "roller"

IMO the best way to test it would be out of the car and on a stand. That way a buyer could see it with the pan off, scope out the cylinders, and/or have more access to check other specs. Ideally, I'd like to know about the cylinders and any ovaling, followed by (if they are out of spec) how the bearings are.
Not saying it's worth nothing or that hearing it run doesn't count for anything, or that even with those issues it wouldn't be worth that price.

No I don't know the seller he's a member of a 996 group on Facebook. We corresponded back and forth a bit. He works for a company that does the conversions. Just thought that for $5,500 a solid running motor would be an excellent option for anyone with a roller.

$5.5K really is a good deal for an engine if you can hear it running and then have a chance to check the internals too (borescope, pull the pan, check the filter).

It is a heck of a gamble. Testing/inspecting the things that really matter for example (ovality) are not practical.
Logically .buy it for core price and be prepared to do a complete rebuild.

You want to know why the IMS bearing and water pump were replaced. All too frequent and very expensive scenarios include water pump failure clogs cooling ducts in engine and only the water pump is fixed and ims bearing was leaving metallic bits in the oil filter so the bearing was swapped out leaving a time bomb for someone else.

The obsession with the low price but lack of technical history may produce an interesting rebuild thread in future. Just for perspective from personal experience rebuilding an M96 - the cost of parts, machining and special tools you do not have exceeds $10,000 with a few serious upgrades. It takes months and requires skills & knowledge few of have - unless you go to Raby-school. Ahsai's Thread hints at the issues and standards required.
OTOH , you might get lucky -it is a gamble.
The trick will be taking advice you get on how far down to dismantle the engine & what to check for/replace/upgrade before you install it.

A) Good price point for a running motor in a car you can hear and drive.
B) Scary that the engine is going to be replaced by a swap AFTER the IMSB and water pump have been addressed. Makes a guy go -- hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?
