First trackday on the 996. Tips and/or advice?

Oil levels when hot show different than when cool. Even on the stick, at least on my 99s. Feel free to check it on the track and then check it the next day. Your experience may vary.
Mid stick provides adequate oil. My understanding is that top of the stick is part of the issue with the AOS smoking.
And both of these can be found by searching FSI posts.

Also, guaranteed that the tires will go up more than a couple pounds. If you are driving so slow that they only go up a couple pounds, you are going to have a pissed-off conga line behind you.

Agree. Filling to the top is just begging to have the AOS spewing clouds of smoke. BTDT.

Also, I assume most of you guys wear car specific helmets? I only own motorcycle road race helmets - and I know the design is different.
I went through the providers FAQ, and didn't see this - can I use a light tint face shield?

Motorcycle helmets aren't fire retardant. It's probably worth picking up an SA2015 helmet.

^^^ Yes, warm up brain and tires for a couple laps.
Motorcycle helmet is fine (it's up to the club, we allow them in PCA), as long as it has the current rating. As mentioned above, MC helmets don't have the fire rating. Tinted shield is fine too, if it's what you prefer. I leave the shield up and wear driving glasses.
What organization are you racing with? I imagine that they will have rules that you need to be familiar with. What will be the passing rules? Point-by?

Here are their passing rules:
We have different passing rules for different run groups. Our advanced run group offers open passing, with or without a point by. The intermediate groups allow passing anywhere on track with a point-by. The beginner group allows point-by passing only in straight sections (no passing in turns).
So I really only need to worry about people passing me in the straight, which I am fine with. The C4 is not that fast.

I do the Hooked on Driving track day events, where motorcycle helmets are not allowed. Check first to make sure you're good to go. Most loaner helmets typically suck. White "Stig" helmets add 5bhp to the car.

Speed Ventures allows MC helmets, just wondering if it's not a good idea or not.

Along with the fire retardant material, car helmets are designed for multiple impacts, think rollover, where as bike helmets are designed for a larger single impact, now think t bone accident with rider catapulted large distances.

If the group allows a MC helmet, it most likely still needs to be SNELL rated like M2010.
Most groups also won't accept helmets that are older that the last rating before the current one (2015), so a SNELL 2010 is OK, but a 2005 probably is not.
Many people either leave the visor up or remove it. Its up to you. Some say the visor gives you additional protection for your eyes.
If your helmet is in an accident where it get a major impact, throw it away. You only have one noggin.
If you search the web a bit, you can find SA2010 helmets for under $150
Also, if you plan on doing a bunch of track days, invest in driving gloves and shoes. A full suit is fine and certainly gives you more protection from fire, but depending on what class you are running in or how mnodified your car is may not be required
