On a 996 C4S, I put on one of those silly KN Air Filters. I just took it off and put back on the OEM one. However, there is an empty hole in the air filter (see pics) where a hose should be going into. Other pics online of 996s show a hose going into it. The problem is that there is no hose to attach to it. The car has been running fine, but I don't want to be doing long term damage.
What is the missing hose and how do I get a new one?
This is where the tiptronic breather hose connects to. If you do not have a tiptronic you should order the equivalent rubber intake pipe without this branch.
I do not know if all the 996 tiptronic cars have this specific configuration. At least my 2002 996 with the mercedes transmission has it. The earlier 996 has a ZF gearbox, so it could be different. Maybe also for other years could be they changed the design.
dont know if you have a tip or not. the tube goes to the trans and has to do with a warm up actuator - if i remember , so there is a hard tube going to it
As others have mentioned if you have a manual you have the wrong intake hose.
You have 3 options:
1. Order a manual intake hose from eBay or alike, even the dealership although they are fairly robust a good used one will do.
2. Purchase a fabspeed "cold air intake" (which actually isn't a cold air intake) or schnell intake both of which come with a hose and a cap to remove (fabspeed) or close off (schnell) the helmholtz resonator (small box inside the airbox to reduce noise emissions).
3. Purchase a straight hose from eBay and make a DIY helmholtz block off or leave it uncapped.
All 3 are good options IMO #1 is the most preferable but I'd definitely replace it sooner rather than later because you'll be allowing unfiltered air from the engine bay to be sucked into your intake bypassing all the filtration, that's not good.
For those who have the breather tip connection and want to upgrade to another type of intake, such as a CAI you can modify the intake pipe by cutting off the breather pipe of the original and paste it onto the replacing pipe with some good glue.
I have seen a solution by installing a small air filter on the loose end. But this option looks way better and is pretty easy to do. I did this when I installed the IPD plenum with larger throttle body. As it gets a whole new intake pipe then.

yes ... It comes with the plenum which is designed to operate with the larger throttle body which requires a larger diameter of the pipe at that end. The intake pipe was modified by my indy who glued the breather pipe to it.

I think the larger TB makes the car bit more responsive on the throttle input. Overall performance increase is small but noticeable.
I do not like the intake noise I got in return by the resonator bypass. I think it is too loud and resonates a lot in the cabin at sub 3000rpm. At least in my case and personal opinion and I drive the car daily so it starts to bother me during normal traffic driving. Maybe also the fact it is a tiptronic adds to this as revs are picking up a bit different then a manual due to the torque converter characteristics.

I had the resonator out for a bit I didn't find it that loud as I've got cargraphic mufflers that drowned most of it out. I don't daily drive mine though.

i have the cargraphic mufflers too. Indeed they are great in attenuating these kind of resonances.
