Default Magnetic Drain Plug pics

Hello,

I changed my oil yesterday, 3,100 miles.

Here is a look at the magnetic drain plug before I wiped off the gray paste and after. You can see what was wiped off on the paper towel.

I guess it looks ok.

I have these so far. Plus I did collect a sample on this drain.

you really had to add 2 quarts on 4k miles??

That is a lot of oil use

In both my 04 Boxster and my 996, if I add any oil at all in 5k, its a few ounces a most

Yes. I had to add about 1 qt per 2500 miles on my old car, M3. I used Motul X-Cess 5w40 on my last drain and added 1.5 qt over 3100 miles. I thought I read that Porsche doesn't consider oil usage a serious problem until it is more than 1qt per 700 miles? Maybe my cylinders are becoming oval.

At least everything has been consistent since I bought the car last April. I have covered 13k miles since then. I try to keep my sump constantly at full. I like to think that my IMS bearing enjoys taking a little bath in the oil each night. haha

I have never added oil to my motor unless I'm changing the oil... I do change out my oil filter every one or two AutoX events and I top it off with exactly what I take out...

I do not think it is "normal" to add that much oil... where is it going?

According to Porsche, 1 quart per 900-1000 miles is within spec.

Yup - the manual indicates that some oil usage is normal. I would become concerned if the amount of oil being consumed changes...

I have a 2005 elantra my daughter drives and it never needs oil between oil changes. My Honda and Mazda never needed oil. But my BMW M3 needed two quarts between oil changes. I did two UOAs on that car and they were very good. All wear metals low. My UOAs on this Porsche are also very good. I am thinking some oil is burning off in the cylinders. My car may not be as "tight" as others.

Just means your engine is extra lubed! HA! Both my 996 and 997 use(d) oil at a rate of around .5 quart per 1200 miles.

It definitely helps the additive pack and keeps diluting the dirt in the oil. As long as the reason it is using oil isn't a super bad thing.

Is it really that hard to take pictures that are not our of focus? Trying to guess what's on there is not my cup of tea. I prefer to see things in focus.

I hear you. The first pic, if in better focus would look like oil. Until I wiped it off with paper towel it was not clear that any metal was on the plug. So that is good. I probably could've wiped some of the oil off without getting the iron paste, but really not that obvious that the paste existed. I only did 3,160 miles so I am thinking 5 or 6k miles would actually show a little more ferrous metal.
