I thought only if you go with the insurance and the repairs is it listed as an accident on the cars history. So fix it your self and purchase the parts as needed. Looks like a nice car to me.

OP, if you're still looking for a body shop in San Diego I have a couple of leads for you.
*edit* Ah, I saw your decision as made halfway down page 3.
If it's not too late, I strongly encourage you to re-think plowing all of that money into a car that will be carrying a salvage title. At least until you spend some time researching what salvage titles do to resale values. I understand you currently have no interest in resale value...but if that ever changes and you have dumped that money into restoring what could have been a repair...
You're going to drop all of the insurance money (and then some, I'm guessing) restoring a car that will be less than it was when you started, and then you're going to spend more money on parts that will make it less stock.
This makes me think that the money is not the primary concern. If what you want is "your" 996, that's fine - it's just difficult for some of us to make the shift from seeing this primarily as a cost-benefit question.
