Default 996 Exhaust Rust

Just noticed some rust and slight crack on silencer. Appreciate any guidance on best approach to avoid further damage. Car is 2004 C2. 84k miles.

Thanks.

mine is doing the same and while it was off my car, I asked my welder to fix it for me.

he said it's not worth it and to just buy a new system or have him fab me up one. I think he didn't want to change the wire in his machine.

Those joints are double-rolled, and the outside edge always rusts first. If you do not have an exhaust leak, you can hit 'em with a wire brush and some Duplicolor high-heat ceramic spray paint to encapsulate the bare metal and keep them from rusting further.

Getting new ones is a great idea, but if it's not currently in the budget, an hour of brushing and a $10 can of paint will make them look a whole lot less terrible.

He didn't want to deal with the prep - welding to rust is a no-go, so he would have been stuck grinding for a while to get it clean enough to weld decently...and he would have been boned if he'd wound up melting through the skin.
