Default Rusted dampers

2004 C2. Top of dampers appear to show rust. Anyone know if this is a concern. Top mounts and Bump stops will be replaced next week. Thanks.

Yikes! That looks like trouble all over. Replace the struts as well.

Is it supposed to taper at the top, or was there metal there at some point?

that does not look good. Most certainly is a concern.

Is that from an e30? I expect that kind of thing on one of those

Yeah, I wouldn't be comfortable driving that. I'd also be concerned about what else may be in bad shape. Always possible that the strut was just defective, but I'd go over every inch of the suspension and surrounding areas on all 4 points just to be sure.
