So the previous owner of this car put sumitomo 295/30 tires on the back wheels. Today I was pulling the wheels to give things a good cleaning and the tire figment doesn't look right. What do you guys think of these pics? These tires are sitting on sporttechno wheels.
So I just looked up tires on Tirerack for $hit$ and giggles and now I see why... Sumi's are $500 for the set, Pilot Sports are $1,400 for the set. Wonderful... wonder how long the Sumi's will last...
actually years ago i put sumi's on my ferrari 308 - they are a good tire just want to make sure fitment is proper - i'm surprised the tire shop mounted those on your wheels
I'm finding this car was a bit neglected by the last owner. Every time I work on it, clean it or drive it, I find something else that needs attention. But not to worry, I'll nurse her back into shape.
Looks fine to me. In general, there is a fair bit of wiggle room on tire sizes, and while that does have a slightly "stretched" appearance, it shouldn't have any negative consequences. There is even variation in width in tires of the same size - for my last car, if you stacked the pilot super sports I had next to the potenza RE-71Rs, the track-focused tire stack was a few inches taller. Enjoy the car and don't worry about it, but when it comes time to replace those I'd consider going to something a bit nicer.
FWIW, I've got the Sumis on my C4S and they're great. I would have happily bought PS2s for it but decided to give the Sumis a shot at a fraction of the price after reading all of the great reviews. In fact, for the price, I figured I'd just eat some of the cost, throw them on eBay and replace them with PS2s if I ended up hating them. Fast forward a few years and I'm replacing the rears with new Sumis (the fronts are fine). I thought about replacing the whole set with PS2s but I've had no issues with them at all (noise, handling, etc.). Yes, they're less expensive than PS2s...a LOT less expensive...but that doesn't necessarily translate to bad.
You can get away with a bit of stretch on a wide wheel like the 996's rears...the biggest drag is the amount of curb rash one accumulates with a stretch. I need to go wider on my next set - BEFORE I pay to get my rims refreshed.
in all seriousness i would not take turns to the extreme - perhaps someone will chime in who is more familiar with the tire mounting issue
I don't understand why "extreme turning" would be an issue? But I guess I don't really know what "extreme turning" actually IS, so that ignorance on my part should probably be addressed before attempting to understand why it must be avoided for specific wheel/tire pairings.
