I just bought an Element fire extinguisher with the Pelican group buy. Seems like a better solution to me than a traditional extinguisher. Right now it's just in the frunk loose, but it's so small and light I might leave it like that.

That's the one I was thinking of, thanks!

It does ABC so it'd work
Just their advertisements had mostly all air cooled engines, which is a very declining market even before they burn.....

The vehicles at my work are equipped with even smaller ones. The safety officer jokes they would only be good to put out a small ashtray fire (but the insurance company likes them).

With the exception of the 996, all my cars have a grown-up extinguisher in the back.

Very Impressive... great lesson. I have one in Garage, Both kitchens, Other than putting this one in the Targa now, nothing in the cars.

If I was back living in Cali (late 70's) I'd probably have one everywhere also. Kinds like having the generator at FL house

That's the proper size of extinguisher that everyone needs. I have one in my garage and kitchen. Anything smaller is useless in an engine fire. You will cause more problems tying to play Fire Marshall Bill with those small extinguishers than just waiting for the fire department to arrive.

As my retired firefighter father says, “Those little extinguishers are to buy time to get people out, not put engine fires out.”

Anyone here with experience with the Cold Fire extinguishers? The 20oz model is supposed to contain enough for a 12 second continuous flow.

12 seconds of what amount of flow? That thing is the size of a hair spray, you really think it will do anything other than making you open the engine bay and feed the fire with more air?

Yup, we're having this same conversion over on the Speedster Owners Club. I've had a Bug burn down and I tell these guys they are kidding themselves with these little units...Try driving and pretend you see smoke, pull over and do what you think is necessary, practice makes perfect, but you need a fire extinguisher that will get the job done.

If the fire doesn’t ruin your car, the traditional extinguishing agent will. Pick your poison IMHO.

That is exactly the point, just long enough to get out of the vehicle. I don't want to own a car that caught on fire. The damage is done, time to move on. Life and limbs are #1.

But you ARE already out of the vehicle if you are trying to put the engine fire out. So then what's point of having these small extinguishers?

In a house fire, you should get everyone out and then if you still think you can put the fire out, go and try. But you need to know how to put a fire out or else you will make things worse. This goes for engine fires too. Most people pop the hood and then continue to open. That is not how you put a fire out but is a good way to make things worse.
