Talking New (to me) 911, first Porsche - 2000 C2

I shopped around a lot of different cars before I realized I should get a Porsche, and then I shopped around Caymans and Boxsters before I realized I can pretend that a 911 is a family car, and a 996 is so reasonably priced. But this was the first (and only) one I drove before buying!

The car is tight and tidy, remarkably good condition for just on 100k miles. Got a PPI at the dealer and I really only need to get the 90k major service - recent work includes new clutch and brakes (rotors and pads) amongst other things, generally good service history.

I'm still coming to terms with the driving. It's not as 'sharp' as some other cars I've had, but the rear really digs in nicely when cornering under power. The transmission feels great and the engine sounds great. This car will see the track but not in a rush - I want to settle in and uncover any issues through regular driving.

I probably need to update the suspension, and the exhaust volume could dial up a notch or two. It runs at just a touch over 180° when driven, and I smell a whiff of clutch or brake pad.

So I need to find a decent mechanic in Chicago area, preferably northern suburbs. And I want to know a benchmark lap time for stock 996.1 C2 at Road America

Oh, IMS hasn't been done. The replaced the clutch within the last 10k/15k miles and didn't do it then. I'm thinking that a 2000 model should most likely be the dual row bearing which isn't really an issue.

Very nice! Welcome. Yea, if it's a dual row I wouldn't worry about it.

Congrats and welcome my fellow Chicago peep.

As for the "sharp" handling, that can be solved by upgrading to 18" wheels, better tires and suspsension.
