Given the task of getting to the starter, I will probably just replace it. Not a very expensive part and would rather address it ahead of time then wait until complete failure.

For those who guessed correctly, your detective skills are better than mine for sure - thanks!

I would also suggest replacement if you don't have a lot of time to redo in case of failed remedy.

I think a new Bosch is around $150 or so from my memory.

It will not fail, just make noise. Had one on my daily driver VW (same design starter) that I put hundreds of thousands of miles on it and made noise for years, then I sold the car. I would not take the starter out just because of the noise.

depends on how much you value your time so it's your call. If you decide to get a new one, get this one and pay no attention to "Do not fit your car" warning. Also, do not go with Bosch catalogue either. Both Amazon and Bosch are wrong
