i've heard it can be replaced without engine removal - i'm sure someone with more mechanical knowledge will chime in

It's a bear for MkIIs. Engine needs to be lowered to the max to gain access. Let me know how many hrs your mechanic is charging you as I'm curious. I would think a few hrs plus parts ($100 parts?).

What does the fluid smell like? Sweet? Oily?
I can't help with the noise, but I had a similar problem in the Boxster with the bellows hose below the AOS that let loose. They get really brittle and can fire the collected oil down the side of the heads (right side on Boxster), rather than returning it to the case.

Maybe true on a 996.1 or 997. I'll be impressed if anyone can do it under 3hrs on a 996.2 coupe, let alone charging you 3 hrs only.
