Default 02 996 Catalytic Converters

I need 'em. Don't want them but I'm told I need them so I'm posting here asking for advice on my options. Loud rattle coming from the rear end and I can't pass emissions so I'm shopping. I'm not looking to squeeze extra HP out of the car. I just want it back on the road, legal, reliable, and safe/fun to drive.

Found two options on Pelican. OEM is stupid expensive! $2,000 left and $2,200 right...crazy! They also have DEC 50 State Compliant Cats, $684 each. Needless to say I'm leaning towards the DECs. Any input here? Any known issues by NOT going OEM?

Also saw this on Fabspeed. $2,300 for the pair. Less expensive than OEM but still more than DEC...so I'm still leaning towards DEC. Thoughts?

I'm told I can't buy used from a shop but they have hinted I may be able to find used Cats for my 02 on the internet. That scares me a bit, but I'd love to hear from you otherwise. Please share your thoughts.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Why not just buy an after cat, have an exhaust shop cut off the current one and weld in the new one? Would cost a fraction of the price.

I just got one of John's X-pipes and while mine is cat less, the unbelievably high quality of the pipe makes me think the catted version would be no different. Speedtech has got to be the best quality for the money out there.

Another option is discountconverters.com
I've been running a pair for a few months no issues perfect fit. Recommended by my Indy and I'm very satisfied by quality and price.

When it came time to do something about the noise a loose converter brick was making I sourced a couple of exhaust manifolds with the converter as part of the manifold at a local Porsche salvage parts business.

I found a couple of exhaust manifolds to fit my car -- 2002 Boxster -- and gave them both a good shake and both were quiet. From then on I never set them down or treated them rough as put them in the car then paid for them. IIRC they were around $400/each. Factory units were IIRC more than double that each.

Later I had the tech install the converters and afterwards the knocking/buzzing noise was gone along with an intermittent P0430 error code.

Now in some states it may be against the "law" to use used converters so you need to check. But if you can use them legally used stock converters are a bolt in replacement, fit perfectly, can can be a cost effective way of resurrecting a sick stock exhaust system.

Might mention the Porsche salvage business gave me a "warranty" that if the converters proved bad out of the box so to speak I could bring them back for at least an exchange. Oh and I still have the original units which I can sell at a converter recycling shop.

I had this same issue a few years ago when mine got clogged. I used it as an opportunity to increase performance and went with an x-pipe from Fabspeed.

Sure there are cheaper options but it transformed the sound of my car and the butt dyno has the impression there is more power available at the upper RPM ranges.

It's a pretty piece of engineering so it's too bad it sits under the car.

For another data point, the OEM cats are not as expensive as you say. Maybe that's the price at your local dealer but if you buy them from Sonnen Porsche they are as follows:

Left $1317.03
Right $1315. 34

I went to my local muffler shop and he provided and installed a new cat for $150 or so. Works great and passes emissions. You shouldn't have any problem and there's no need to pay $2k for one of these things - that's insane.
