Engine ticking sound every 1/2 second @ idle
Just started my baby after sitting 9 days. Noticed this ticking noise probably every 1/2 second I'd guess. I'm going to go give it a run right now, maybe something got a little dry??
Only 2200 miles on factory 0W-40 and oil is right at full mark.
I don't believe it is fuel injector ticking, then again maybe it is.

Valve lifter, especially after sitting so some air got in it. That clatter should (i.e. had better) clear up as the oil warms, but now that your motor is loosening up you are probably stuck with it.
Very common "issue," but not a worry in terms of durability, just mildly annoying.

If rather like diesel clatter, only on cold starts and clears up with temp, it is most probably the hydraulic valve lifters and hopefully that is it. If so it will be back I'm afraid, but again there is nothing to be done about it, and your motor would not be at risk from that.
And no, Porsche will not be tearing down your engine for that on the warranty--they have been asked many times.

You probably have one lifter going flat- but if it goes away once oil starts to flow, you'll probably have to live with it. My tt doesn't do it, but I had the problem on one of two E Class Benzes I owned at the same time. One always did it, one never did. Both lasted beyond 150,000 miles by the time I sold them. AS

Both my '02 and '03 996's did this after sitting for several days.
Always goes away, does not rear its head until car has been sitting for several days again.
I assumed it was lifters. Seems everyone agrees.
I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks Dirk and everyone.
It has been quiet now. I guess after sitting for a week and a half every bit of oil was down below.
However I thought 0W-40 pumped much faster than that, because she ticked for at least 4-5 minutes.

Takes a while for the oil to displace all of the air, especially if that is 4-5 minutes of just idling. Your engine is still pretty tight I think, probably come on (i.e. less sitting) and clear up quicker as you go. Been a while, but I think mine evolved similar to that.
It is because these modern synth oils flow so well at low temperatures, no free lunch i guess.

My '02 Carrera, after 3,500 miles (about 10 months), developed a clacking sound that did not go away after warming up. They needed to replace one bank of lifters.
Even after that, if I didn't drive the car for a week or more, it would often have a clacking sound for the first few minutes, which then went away. Sounded like an old VW beatle...
