A lobotomized chimp could change the oil in a 996. We all know how much you enjoy making the easy complex and the complex Byzantine, but your hand-wringing about OP not getting sufficient info for an oil change is ludicrous, even for you.
On the plus side, you made your disdain evident in less than 40,000 words, which is nice.
OP, if you feel that you have been cheated out of information you need, feel free to send me a private message and I'll explain the intricacies of the M96 oil change. Even though, like Macster, I'm not a "lubrication specialist."
You won't even need a Celette bench for the oil change. I promise.

Having just picked up a 996 I checked and I have oil just on the dipstick but no idea what's in it! I have looked at all the threads and am not sure if I should just top up with recommended oil so 5w 40 ACEA A3 or should I wait for a full oil change at the service so I know what's in it in case anything odd's been added like non synthetic by the previous owner / garage. I'm just worried I add some
thing that does not mix
I may just be being precious but its a lot of dosh to **** up.

First to the OP: if you are going to drive it before getting the oil change, by all means top off with oil. More than likely it is synthetic oil so no worries.
Second to the OP: Good idea to get a full oil change, either at the service or DIY. It is up to you when, but it will bring peace of mind knowing "what is in there." I'm afraid we got way off on this one. Good luck!

Honestly, I'm amazed that the oil low comment didn't earn OP a thousand-word warning that his RMS was leaking, that intermix was probably at fault, and/or that the AOS was in critical need of replacement. Once a certain member starts waxing poetic about possible causes of benign symptoms, nothing is off the table.

And cold weather, or cold starting, or if the owner ever had a cold while driving it.
