Default Oil top up - what to use?

Having just picked up a 996 I checked and I have oil just on the dipstick but no idea what's in it! I have looked at all the threads and am not sure if I should just top up with recommended oil so 5w 40 ACEA A3 or should I wait for a full oil change at the service so I know what's in it in case anything odd's been added like non synthetic by the previous owner / garage. I'm just worried I add some
thing that does not mix

I may just be being precious but its a lot of dosh to **** up.

Remove the doubt and guessing game....do a full oil change for this "NEW " to you car. Then drive and enjoy it.
P.S. You are able to DIY this, right?

Different schools of thought.

- There are 9 or so quarts of oil in one of these, adding another one to top it off of a different brand isn't going to do much as long as it's an approved oil.

- Change it all because it's a new to you car and start from scratch.

- Go online and buy a microscope, change the oil and filter, look at filter through the new to you microscope while wearing a rolex and posting pictures on here. Freakout at anything that looks like anything in the oil filter, wonder about your IMS, RMS, PMS, SOS...

- Wear your Rolex and take it somewhere with a hot receptionist that charges $300 for a oil change.

No matter what you do be sure to ask if they use a new virgin crushwasher on the drain plug and that they torque it down to spec and (since it was a virgin) that they brag about it later to friends.

[edit] with warm/hot oil those 9 or so quarts comes out fast. Be SURE to have a large enough pan or device to catch it all and/or/both do it in a friends driveway or yard in case you make a mess.

Chiamac, Ian may not be "seasoned" enough to catch your DRIFT 😉
Ian, I just changed my oil in my garage, no lift/ramps needed. 37 ft-lbs for drain plug, 19 ft-lbs for filter. If you wish, cut open/inspect your used filter and send oil to Blackstone for UoA.
P.S. Stand by for an oil debate to ensue shortly.

Don't like Rolex, I will follow the hands dirty approach I think.

Thanks

No worries, coming from the UK we have very limited hot receptionists!

=)

One of the biggest benefits to these engines is being able to take the filter apart and inspect what's going on.

I'm not a fan of sending oil in unless there is a suspected problem, but it's harmless anyway and whatever floats peoples boats. Over a few changes those tests should give a baseline of what the engine is doing.

Not as comfortable or easier than going to a dealer and waiting in the reception room drinking coffee.

Indeed, a lift or ramps will make the job 500% easier & faster. Was solo when I did the job (no wife/daughters as assistants) so had to make do with the drivewy.

Going to dealer is not comfortable (at least to me). I have to take time off of work which costs money.

Changed oil in my car in like 15 minutes not counting the drain time as I enjoyed a beer and watched the latest episode of Street Outlaws.

Thank goodness no one has mentioned "olive oil" or "canola oil", perhaps those stale comments are finally dead and buried. Just lame...
