So 2 weeks in I have gotten in and around the car pretty well. Each time I jump out of the M3 into the 996 I touch the shifter and think DANG that is sloppy.
So I popped up the leather cover and Took a look see. the white plastic bushings front and rear and pretty loose and allow a good bit of slop. but the most slop comes from the the white plastic thing on the left side that the post and ball ride in. Not sure what the white thing does but after a day at work I have not been able to just find a rebuild kit for the whole thing.
and looking at parts contained in a short shift kit the white thing does not come with.
Is the only option a 997 piece from Sun Coast? which has plastic bushings unless I spring for the GT3 piece.
Not balking just want to fix it once.

I installed the B&M SSK and I really like how it has tightened up everything. Very much like a rifle bolt feel when you shift. Zero slop. I have had it installed for a couple of years and have had no issues. I purchased from Eric @ Bumperplugs.com. I bleieve it was under $250.

There is a YouTube video although I cant find it now of a guy that fixed the slop in his 997 shifter. It was two fold. he addressed play along the pin with a washer and created a metal shim around the white piece. Really tightened things up.

I'd second the vote for the Numeric Shifter. I've had one for about a year now and would do it again in a second. If you are patient Numeric occasionally sells demo units for a bit less than full price. But they rarely show up on the used market.

I bought mine with the B&M SSK in it. I don't know how long it's been in the car or how worn it is, but it has a bit too much slop in it for my taste as well.
It's on my list.
