It also references the Excellence Magazine article as the source, which is a review of the Mk2 when it first came out. And that is worth a read for more understanding of the differences. There is probably no well accepted standard for which is "better", gotta decide that yourself.

I would just buy the best example you can find, whether it is a 996.1, 996.2, or 997.1.
I found a 996.2 that was a great deal and jumped on it right away.

I want to thank all of you gentlemen on giving me the information I needed about the MK1 & MK2. After reading all of your feedbacks, links and articles that you post, I now have good knowledge knowing the difference between the 2 model 996. I will certainly pass this knowledge to the next guy who wants to know. If any of you who are curious as to which car i would choose, it would have to be the 996.2. Mainly because of the refresh front/rear bumper and the newer design vario cam plus. Not to say the 996.1 is bad, it's still a fine car.

That's over by EPO.
There are several body shops on that street.
I might drive by and take a look today.
It's not far at all from my route home this afternoon.
