$105k for a 993 (not a turbo). Explain to me how this is worth 5 x my 996.

No affiliation, but this seems like a fair price for a decent car:

Seems like a good deal given the fact that it has documented service of the IMS and clutch at 60K miles. Hopefully the last 8000 miles (after service) hasn't incurred any known killers (e.g. bore scoring) that are prone to the mk1 3.4L motors. Regardless, it looks like a clean example of a mk1 car.

That's the cheapest manual coupe sub 100k miles I've seen. If it had no documentation it would still be a steal.

Actually, I've seen some even lower on the Mk1 manual cars, but this is the first one (at this price level) that claims the IMS retrofit and clutch was replaced within a reasonable amount of time. I can't tell you how many times I've seen 996 sellers say they've "replaced the IMS" only to find out they've driven the car more than the guaranteed life of the IMS replacement. But, I've even seen a couple of Mk1 cars in Florida that had less than 50K miles. I'm not rushing my purchase, but search CL, Autotrader, Cars.com, eBay, etc. on a regular basis. Fortunately for me, these cars are continuing to depreciate. But lots of worn out examples that I wouldn't touch with a 10 ft. pole.

((Personal example of what I mean about being careful when you buy an old 996))
I was seriously considering a low miles '99 Mk1 that looked to be in mint condition. A beautiful color combination (black with Tan interior)... no dents, no accidents, the tan leather interior was super clean. It was being sold by a Honda dealership that had a good reputation. What could be wrong I wondered, but after a closer look, the Carfax (and dealership) couldn't demonstrate any service on the car in the last 10 years. Maybe I was being OCD? If there was no indication of any preventive maintenance being done on a 20 year old car, I didn't want to risk it. What if the car had a bearing swap out with no documentation of what bearing was used or other problems being covered up? At this point, (with no proof of any service), I passed on the car.
The Honda dealership couldn't sell the car and so they sent it to auction. As fate would have it, a small dealership in Atlanta bought it. They paid to have the car transported only to find out the engine had problems and the GA DMV wouldn't register it because it wouldn't pass emission. After having it diagnosed by a service center, the small dealership was told it was throwing several codes. Not sure, what the codes were, but the owner told me it was serious. They ended up eating crow and will be attempting to sell it at auction again. I found out about it after noticing the VIN number. Such a shame, but I'm relieved that I dodged a major bullet.

If you can get the history of the replacement engine, that might be a steal.

was thinking the exact some thing. Seems well sorted with some great mods. Aftermarket exhaust too perhaps? Exhaust tips are not OEM and with the other mods done, exhaust upgrade wouldn't surprise me.

Are these cars sniffin' some major crack these days or what? I would love to hear what FSI says is the root cause of these motors having cylinder cracks. Is it the composition of the aluminum in the engine that can't handle the hot and cold cycles?
