Which Michelins? There are three current versions used by Porsche.

- Pilor Sport: They suck in the dry but are great in the rain
- Pilot Sport Rib: They are great in the dry and not so good in the rain
- Pilot Sport 2 or PS2*: They are awesome in the dry and likely to be below average in the rain

* PS2: Tires mounted on the new GT3

Pilot Sport NO--Standard on the GT2
Pilot Sport N1--Standard on the 996
Pilot Sport N2--Standard on the GT3

Now can you be more specific?

Viken,

I never thought I would say this , but I have to disagree with you. Based upon my experience the NO is a great tire in the dry, I haven't tried it in the wet.

You have to try really hard to lose a GT2 with them in the dry.

By way of comparison, a tire which never impressed me was the Pirelli P Zero on the TT, IMO they sucked, big time.

Umm... maybe you should try harder?

Let me guess... they were too noisy?

Nope!

They were lousy in the dry. I'm too busy listening to the engine to hear the tire noise.

I believe Viken's comment should be consumed with relative tire development in mind.....
The N0 tire seemed excellent when it first became available. It was Michelin's latest development at that time. Now the N2 is available. The technology and development in this tire is literally generations advanced compared to the N0 tire. The N2 tire is highly superior to the N0 tire in the dry. This is as per Michelin development engineers, and professional drivers who have compared the N0 and N2 back to back. Although the GT3 is a phenomenal vehicle, this tire difference in part explains why the GT2 is relatively close to the GT3 in lap times despite significantly more torque, hp, and wider track. So, the N0 is a great tire, but the N2 is better. It is all relative.

The Pirellis tend to be a bit squirmy in dry braking, and frankly the brand seems more prone than average to sidewall blowouts, even in the realm of low-profile performance tires.

Anyway, the loudest possible tire has to be the Goodrich T/A kkd. I practically tore them off the car I hated that so much after about 4000 miles. Some interaction between the large size of the tread blocks and the resonant frequency of the '99 chassis I would guess--they howled and thrummed--might not be exactly the same since the chassis is stiffer now.
