Default 996 Cabriolet Top "tension string" problem

Hi All,

My top does not fall into the groove on the drivers side when closing and when I investigated I found this spring and elastic strap that pulls the top inward so that it will fall into the grove loose.

Can anyone tell me where it needs to be reconnected?

Thanks,

Dan

Thanks, I guess having been a member since 2005 I couldn't use the search or I should "show my work" for the professor... Still not sure where to connect based on the Boxster write up. It is helpful but I was asking for more specific information, which I thought the forum was for. I sure miss the 944 guys who were not such dicks maybe because they weren't lawyers and doctors!

Sorry for my brief post. Not trying to be a dick. I was genuinely trying to be helpful.

By "30 seconds of searching", I was implying that this may not be the complete answer, but is a place to start.

No problem, I understand.

I've not read the links so apologize if this is not helpful.

I had a similar issue earlier in the week actually, although it was with an aftermarket replacement top (I imagine that it works in exactly the same way since it has to fit the existing mechanism. In my case, there was an elastic strap with a spring attached to it hanging vertically. The thicker black rubberized(?) coated edge of the convertible top was not seating into the black plastic trim pieces. When I took it to the shop that replaced the top, they immediately knew what it was and explained that the elastic strap with the spring goes between the headliner and the top (so laterally across the car under the top) and there is a corresponding strap on the other side. The coupling between the spring and the other strap is prone to coming apart. It took them less than an hour to reattach it and they described the job as "a pain to get to but easy enough to do."

Thanks, that was the information I was looking for.

As an update for someone in the future with the same issue, there is a rectangular tab on the passenger and driver side of the top that the strap with the spring in the middle is sewn to, the strap then pulls together the edge of the top so that it falls into the groove when closing. Mine was broken on the passenger side, once we pulled the strap through to the other side I held the strap in place, pulling against the spring while my wife using a heavy duty needle and heavy duty black thread reattached to the triangle piece of canvas. Everything works great now. Here is a picture with a quick drawing showing where the triangle the strap attaches to is (note this is on the driver side but it is the same on both sides.)

Sorry to resurrect an ancient thread, but does anyone have a part number for this spring? I can't find it in any of the parts diagrams. Mine is rusted and broken.

Hello everyone, I need to know if anyone knows the part number to the spring. Mine stretched and doesn’t work anymore. I asked three Porsche dealers for the part but they have no idea.
