Default Engine won't turn over

My engine would not turn over and I had the shop look at it. They said no particles in the oil but they could only manually turn the engine half way around. Approximately 50,000 on engine with LN bearing and oil changes every 5,000 miles. Appears engine toast. Anyone have this problem? My wife was driving and she said it made some noises before she pulled in. Any thoughts would be helpful or maybe a good used engine.

Pull off belt and try to spin crank.

No metal bits in the oil, but isn't the LN bearing ceramic?

Based on what you write looks like valves and pistons are in contact at some point during a revolution.

One WAG is the IMSB stud snapped and engine cam timing off.

But it could a broken camshaft.

Or it could be something else. Regardless the odds are high the engine's toast. Up to you if you want to fund an expedition into the engine to find out more.

There are engines around. Check ads for Porsdche salvage businesses in Panorama and Excellence and call around.

+10000. Pull off the belt and see if it can turn. I didn't try that on my previous 996 when I thought the motor was toast. Turned out to be a seized alternator and the motor wouldn't turn a centimeter with the belt on.

Thanks for the help. I'll try that. The shop is reputable and they said it would rotate half way then stop.

No word yet. They said they would pull the belt and try to turn the engine.

Thanks for asking. I hope this is not engine number 3 in 100,000 miles.

Saw your other post. Did you get a diagnosis or are you just browsing? And 3 engines in 100K? Want to share more of the story?

Good news. It appears that the alternator was causing the problem and the motor turns easily once the belt was removed. The alternator was toast but appears engine is good.

This forum deserves a special thanks for the information to pull the belt off. They were quite suprised at the shop.

Awesome news! That makes two 996's with the dreaded IMS/Alternator failure...yours and mine.
